Titillating Titles [message #35891] Di, 17 Mai 2005 08:55

'Allo 'allo!

I've recently gone stark raving mad downloading the H2G2 radio
fits/phases/episodes/what-have-you. The Primary/Secondary phases are
nice and clean, though not specifically entitled "PRIMARY" and
"SECONDARY", but I was able to avoid looking stupid by reading some
other chap's post and putting my F2 button to use.

Now, whilst the episodes of the first two phases have very quaint and
slightly soluble names like "Intro - Vogon Poetry" and "Brontitor Cave
- Archaeologist", the Tertiary and Quandary (what I call "Fourthiary")
have no names, aside from their enraging "fits".

The format is something like "Fit the xTH", where x is a real number
>10.

Anyways, while that may be nice n' peachy for the majority of leechers,
I am somewhat inclined to believe that there should be some other form
of naming these episodes.

Although I'm extremely tempted to devise my own naming system, like
calling the 6th episode of the Tertiary Phase (AKA "Fit the
Eighteenth") something along the lines of "God's Final Message -
Hactar", I have a feeling that someone, somewhere has already gone
through the laborious task of conceiving a concise, yet informative
labelling system for these otherwise oddly-named series.

In any event, I'd appreciate any help relative to my dilemma (and no,
prescribing some Xantax and/or Advil won't help much.)

And where does afda stand on renaming other people's pirate downloads? This
is getting very complicated.

I like self documenting names. I find "fit 3rd" much worse than
"Trillian appears" or something like that.

Fits are what the episodes are called, and have been called ever since they
were first aired in 1978. Fit the first to fit the sixth are the first six
episodes of the Primary Phase. Fit the seventh was originally a Christmas
special but has since become first episode of the Secondary Phase, and fit
the twelfth is the last episode of the Secondary Phase. Fit the thirteenth
to fit the eighteenth are the Tertiary Phase. Fit the nineteenth to fit the
twenty-fourth are the Quandary and Quintessential Phases.

Why doesnt the announcer announce them as such ? I don't hear him
say HHGTTG - Primary Phase or Secondary AT ALL.

Because DNA renamed them Primary/Secondary Phases in 1991 when they were
commercially released for the first time. Thus, when they were recorded,
they weren't considered Phases. The episodes were considered Fits right
from the get-go though.

And now they are considered Phases the announcer (who incidentally is the
same guy as he was all those years ago, introducing a pleasing level of
continuity to the radio series) does say "Tertiary/Quandary Phase" at the
beginning of the episode.

Anything else I've forgotten to mention?

Thank you all for replying!

I've pretty much solved my own problem by devising a new naming method.

I've even put together a (rather messily-done) webpage for this naming
issue:

anyway ?

"The Hunting of the Snark" was a poem by Charles Dodson (aka Lewis Carroll
of "Alice in Wonderland" fame) that was done in eight fits instead of
stanzas, and DNA adopted the word for his own work.

You can read Dodson's work here:

What do you use F2 for? I just get:

Symbol's function definition is void: sml-send-region

which is rather useless ;o)

Actually, IIRC it was Geoffrey Perkins' idea to call them fits, and DNA
agreed. Don't think it was DNA's doing.

I never heard of that before. I probably cannot say that it is too
useful as I will possibly have a heart attack or just run away,
panicking, next time I see a WinME :)

But thanks anyway ;)

I didn't know.

On the other hand I use neither...
