Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek died with Roddenberry.
Berman and Braga produced some good Next Generation episodes,
but even in the last seasons, for every good episode there
was a stupid, cliched, babble-filled time travel/holodeck/etc
episode to make up for it.
Deep Space 9 tried to be something new, that failed. Then
it tried to be Babylon 5, but couldn't. Then it tried to
be Next Generation, but failed. Then it tried to be everything
to everyone with huge story arcs that no one cared about,
and it crashed and burned.
Voyager tried to return to Star Trek 'roots', but B&B's
interpretation of what those roots were, were not what
they actually were. Social context went right out the
window in favor of technology, borg, and Q-based idiocy.
Exploration and fake technology does not a Star Trek make.
And now this new series doesn't even have the Trek name
attached because it's been dirtied so much by B&B's aimless
flailing. A famous actor has been signed for the first time
ever in order to attract attention. The only aspect of
Voyager that worked, tits and ass, has been implemented
in this show in the form of Vulcan baywatch babe t'painful
t'watch. The entire premise seems like an act of desperation.
Farscape, the brilliant show on the Sci-Fi channel that has
been going strong for 3 seasons now (with a 4th forthcoming),
embodies everything that the Star Trek of the 60s, and
Roddenberry's Trek: Next Generation did. Social context has
been firmly established with a fish-out-of-water scenario,
but cliche has been avoided by the show's adherence to one
rule: it remains internally consistent. Characters' motivations
are not centered around artificially advancing the plot, but
rather they are centered around what gains them the most
utility. It is excellently done, the moral dilemmas presented
are far edgier and far more relevant than anything seen on Trek
in the past 6 years, techno-babble is kept to a minimum, and
the cheesy Trek stuff - lame plot devices like the holodeck,
bad action scenes, etc. have been tossed out the window in
favor of solid plotting and modern action.
If Roddenberry came back to life today, I think I know
what he'd be looking forward to, and it would be the 4th
season of Farscape, not ''Enterprise''.

Face it Scapers, nobody gives a fuck about that show.
Its highly touted TV movie bombed and failed to create a buzz - the same
type of buzz that made TNG, X-Files, Buffy, BSG, SG1 hits.

DS9 is considered by many to be the best TV Trek ever, so where are you
plulling your facts from?

They're not talented enough to be on real shows.
