UPN 9 News just announced that Paramount said there would indeed be a Star
Trek XI...
*without ANY pre-existing characters*
Am I yelling in excitement loud enough??
Maybe, without any "old" characters, we can hope that Berman's influence is
DEAD, DEAD DEAD and the new characters with have some..."Pop"!
....along with, hopefully, a REAL plot!!!!

They got a screenwriter Erik Jendresen last I heard, so the script should be
top notch, however, that is just the script. Berman has no reason to jump
out of the franchise. He'll be responsible for the plot, the characters, and
the actors, that is assuming the script and plot ideas actually gets
approved. It would be a huge leap of faith on Paramount's part to shoot the
film, especially with no existing characters.
Question: Who actually owns the rights to the franchise? Paramount or
Berman? My guess would be Paramount. You could do a letter writing campaign
to Paramount to get rid of Berman, but doing so would probably kill the
franchise all together.

Actually, *absolutely* Paramount. Berman is just a hired (though originally
preferred by Roddenberry) lackey. He has no, or very little, controlling
interest in Trek. Not even Roddenberry had "true" controlling interest and
had to settle for Paramount's offers of positions when he was involved in
Trek.
Killing the franchise outright isn't *too* bad an idea. Star Trek never
"dies" forever, it was brought back from true death once before. Kill it
off and you kill off B&B's influence - and when they are *long* gone, sure
never ever to return, we can get it rebuilt again.

They are jumping the gun with that. Berman and Braga are effectively
*gone* from Paramount now, and the studio isn't going to sink a bunch
of money into Trek for a few years.
Don't hold your breath.

Hi!
I think that Star Trek really needs a break, and if, just to recover from
"Enterprise". So trying to prevent Berman from writing Star Trek XI is an
excellent idea. Another box office failure would just increase the degree
of destruction.
It's really funny, that no one at Paramount has ever made him responsible
for his flops. They rather blame it on the Fans than on an incompetent
producer.
In this spirit
Yours Gernot
