| An odd problem... [message #32560] |

I have just produced for myself a rather odd and somewhat surreal
problem...
I needed to record tonight's Quandary Phase episode and went out
specially to buy a stereo audio cable. So far, so good.
Now for the fun bit. As I live in Ireland and Radio 4 doesn't actually
get transmitted here on anything other than cable (ntl) or Sky TV, I've
ended up recording tonight's episode onto video!
Worked wonderfully, but with a slight 'glitch'. The glitch being that
I now want to get the audio off of the video and onto my iMac. The TV
has all sorts of connectors - SCART, Audio Out (Left & Right), S-Video
and Compostite video. Which is nice as I have a large choice of bits
to connect to.
The problem is that the iMac hasn't actually got a stereo input on it.
Got a mono microphone socket and stereo speaker out also got more USB
ports and Firewire ports than I, in all probability, need but no stereo
audio in.
So, any ideas/suggestions/tea/laughter greatly welcomed!
Cheers,
Gary

Get a real computer? (Just kidding!)
You can buy USB and Firewire soundcards, but they might be a bit
expensive for a one-time job.
You could record the channels one at a time through the mic socket, and
spend ages trying to synchronise them.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head!

Well, BBC has the Listen Again feature where you can get the RealMedia. Then
simply use something like NetTransport (sorry, Windows only) to capture the
RealMedia stream to a file on your hard disk.
Not just two, you get 5.1 surround audio with this! :)

Ah, well you see I more of a "Plastic Paddy" moved to Galway from Luton

I live in Mountain View. Do you guys have a Mountain View?
Truthfully, Mountain View got its name from somebody that thought
they could sell land here to easterners with a picturesque name.
I gotta tell you, the mountains you can view from here are nothing
compared to the ones you can see 150 miles to the east of here.

Nicest thing about Mountain View is all the freeways it has for driving away
from it very quickly. Sadly, most of the time they're clogged with people
trying to drive away from Mountain View as quickly as possible and in the
process making quickness impossible. Worse still, when you do finally
manage to get away you end up somewhere like Livermore or Los Banos.
On the up side, I'm nearly always at least 200 miles away from Mountain View
and indeed the entire San Jose metropolitan nightmare and very near the nice
looking mountains to the east that Tian praised earlier.

I've been to the Mountain View where you live - Meth used to live
there.
I was surprised at the "Mountains" that are viewable from Mountain
View. They look kinda like the hills from where my wife harks from,
but instead of being about 4 miles away, they're something like 40 and
therefore much bigger. They just kinda slope up.. then round off..
then slope down again.
Meth now lives in New Zealand. So I went to see him there earlier this
year. On the South Island they have the "Southern Alps" which are all
snow-covered peaks. Look a lot like the 'proper' Alps at the
France/Italy/Switzerland/Austria (et al) conjunction. Until you get
close to them and you see that they're much, much less "Alpy" close
up. Driving up the 'proper' Alps you'd spend most of a day going
zig-zag-zig-zag (etc) up hairpin after hairpin. On NZ's South Island
it's sorta up'n'over in a straight line.
Apparently one of the biggest mountains on this planet is entirely
underwater and made of sand! I heard about it on a radio program about
mountains some months ago - some river "approximately" in the vicinity
of India (I say "approximately" because I'm useless at Geography) has
been washing out sandy deposits for so long that it's created a big
sand-mountain under the sea.
