Domestic: $35,119,000 80.3%
+ Overseas: $8,593,000 19.7%
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------
= Worldwide: $43,712,000
Production budget $50,000,000
So hopefully they are putting a lot of effort into the DVD.
I hope they will make a deal with the BBC for their content.

Trying to determine the structure of a protein by UV spectroscopy was like
trying to determine the structure of a piano by listening to the sound it
made while being dropped down a flight of stairs

It hasn't opened in most of the countries yet though.

And now I will probably induce flamage by saying that if the movie had
been made more accurately reflected the original story, most people
(especially americans) would not have understood or liked it, and it
wouldn't meet budget. It had to be hollywooded up and compromised in
order to make money. I don't think it was compromised unreasonably.
That's just the way the business is. I liked the movie becuase I knew
what to expect. The people that were disappointed likely had
unreasonable expectations and probably have no been very observant with
regards to the movie industry over the years. If you want something
that more accurately reflected the book, you're going to get something
very cheap, cheesy and low budget, and that something already exists as
the TV series. (Granted, it's funny as hell, and it's very
self-awareness of it's campiness lends to some great humor).

Which original story?.....Lets face it, all versions followed their own
personal take on the story...

weeks to run, and several countries haven't even seen it open yet....

That of course is another consideration. But by "original" I am
referring more or less to any version that does not pander towards
Hollywood ideals. For a movie to be a "blockbuster" the guy has to
always get the girl, the bad guys always have to lose, and what was
broken gets fixed before the end. You come out of the theatre feeling
uplifted and settled, so you can go back to your miserable life where
none of the above ideals actually apply.

Not to mention some of us have still only seen it once!
And they say that movies these days are just promos for the DVD. I
have become a *DVDaholic what with the special features and
commentaries and what not.

The film is based on the book. If you watch the movie it says so in the
beginning credits.

Exactly....So it was inevitable that it would happen long before the
film was even made....
I didn't go into the cinema expecting anything less....That might be one
of the reasons why I enjoyed the film, yet so many others felt
dissapointed by it....

True....Very true...

Indeed....With a DVD, you get so much more for your money....Admittedly,
you can never recreate that cinema atmosphere and smell in your home,
but that's easily compensated by the plethora of extra features, and the
ability to pause, rewind, slo-mo, and zoom in when you spot something
interesting or need to nip to the toilet....

What is it with all this Monkey Island bullshit in the group?....
I tried playing Monkey Island in the late 1990's, and it was one of the
worst games I've ever played....

It don't bother me personally, as I have a good killfile filter....
But in the interests of group harmony, and for the sake of my fellow DNA
fans, I'll play it cool....
