In the two thousand and fifth year of Bob, Steve Marshall's voice said the
following, in wonderful perfect quadrophonic sound with distortion levels so
low as to make a man weep:

5. Marvin.
6. Ford with a shopping trolley (cracked me up).
7. The Earth's wonderfully anti-climatic sound effect.
8. The build-up to the above.
9. The cool Guide entry in the credits.
10. The references to the books - "Ix! Err, I mean, Ford."

11. "So that's Humma Kavula! I thought he was just swearing."
12. DNA's nose as the primary design element of the temple.
13. Ford's two very gratuitous but subtle uses of the word "b*lgium."
Should win awards.
14. The ridiculously long pull-back shot of the Vogon ship. (I guess
that's might be John's "build-up".)
15. Arthur and Slartibartfast drop screaming out of the sky next to Uluru,
which a workman, Frank, is busily painting orange. The screaming stops.
"Oh-et Frank!" Frank waves. "Th-that's Frank." And they go zipping
laterally out of frame.
16. The old woman (DNA's mother) calmly reading her paper in the chaos
before the Earth is destroyed. (Now we know where DNA got his looks.)
17. The folks in the bar lying down with paper bags over their heads.
18. The sheep panicking.
19. "So, you're not from Gilford... which would explain the accent, which
I've always wondered about... Um..."
20. "Think Deep" and "I (heart) D.T." T-shirts.
21. Slapsticks.

Aye, that's the one!
And has anybody noticed anything? About the lack of a thirty word, two
comma and one colon preamble, for instance? Isn't it spangly, eh?

44. Trillian in the shower.
I also liked Zaphod inviting Trillian out into space and Arthur's like

It was a £50 note and the sad thing is, if you tried to pay with a £50
note in an English pub, they probably wouldn't accept it!

How is pushing a shopping trolley zany ?
The alcohol bit stopped it being credible. Ford goes to some effort to get a
lot of beer and then gives it away very easily and takes Arthur to a pub
only to order three pints.

True enough - except I think he'd have tried to take it with him rather than

Well, ok, not zany, but just Ford-esque.

It makes perfect sense to me. Ford needs them to drink beer (muscle
relaxant) while he explains to Arthur in private (eg in Arthur's house) that
they have serious problems.
He goes to Arthur's house to find him (thinking him in the house - he even
goes to the door before Arthur calls him). When he chats to Arthur he
realises Arthur isn't going anywhere as he's too worried about his house, so
Ford isn't going to be able to talk to him in private.
So, he uses the beer to distract the workmen to reassure Arthur that his
house his safe. Now he's managed to get Arthur away to speak to him, he
still needs alcohol and a quiet place to chat.
So they go to the pub.

LOL, it sure is...By the time I saw the film, it had become a fifty....

In addition to this, there's another reason I've been told about....It
may be an urban myth, and I can't prove it either way, because I don't
posess £50, let alone a single note of that value....
Anyway, apparently, the £50 note doesn't have the words "I promise to
pay the bearer on demand £50 sterling." printed on it anywhere....
All other Bank of England banknotes have this printed on them somewhere
(with the amount altered to match the note)....
So the theory I was told goes thus....Because a fifty doesn't have these
words printed on it, it's not actually legal tender, and is therefore
refused in certain establishments....
I personally find this hard to believe....I'm certain it must be an
urban myth.....
After all, why would the Bank of England go to the trouble and expense
of printing up millions of banknotes, then declare them all worthless?....

I think he would have got the beer for him and Arthur and then he gives it
to the workers which is an utter waste as they are going to be evapourated
pretty soon.

At which point he gives his beer away. Now if it was his beer he'd want to
get some more to replenish the stuff he'd just given away and he should've
ordered a carry out from the pub.
If he knew Arthur's house was going to be demolished he wouldn't have gone
to knock on the door.

I think it is.
There were quite a few forgeries about a while ago. People so rarely see £50
notes that they didn't know how to tell a real one from a fake. Because of
the numbers of fakes about it was perhaps more likely to come across a fake
than a real one and not having any way of telling which was which people
started to refuse them.
(If you are a shop and you get caught with a forged note you don't get £50
credit, you lose the £50. A big loss to a small business.)

Maybe he didn't want to take it all with him. Maybe he just wanted to drink
a shed load before the destruction of earth. Maybe the pub doesn't do carry

I think you are trying to read too much into what is essentially a throwaway
joke - how zany and alcoholic Ford Prefect is.

They're rare because they're so rarely accepted.

I once had two in my possession at the same time. I can't remember
why, something about getting money from the bank and they only had
fifties.
They're really big, in relation to the sizes of other notes. Didn't
fit in my wallet.
