Personally, I thought it was an OK movie. But, not a great one; in fact, it
wasn't even as good as it had the potential to be, with the
cast/crew/script/story they went for.
Little touches like the airlock scene, (Ford's bit with "What's this... no
nothing" lacked something, for a start)
Humma's plot not being inegrated as fully into the main plotline (if he's
the bad guy, shouldn't he be doing bad things later on? shouldn't he have
been behind destruction of earth, to keep his religious beliefs safe? etc)
Oh and... "We arrived at the wrong place, but ended up where my old enemy
is, who happens to want us to go and get something and has the coordinates
to where we wanted to go in the first place so we can go and get it (but
hasn't bothered to go and get it himself), and then he does not feature any
further in the story". Improbable, or did they accidentally hit the
"Infinite Pointlessness Drive" button?
Why spend 45 minutes on close-ups of "Old Marvin"? Who, I think, ended up
with a greater screen area coverage multiplied by time, than new Marvin
Ford... sad towel fetishist. Turns up with loads of beer but still insists
on going to the pub because they need beer, wanders off to a bar then
wanders back with no impact on story, wanders round a bit more.
Why translate "star spangled banner" into poor overlong song and dance
number?
Zaphod's head... for god's sake... not only did it not look good, it spoiled
some of the fun (kidnap scene with one head kidnapping the other would've
been funny...I think anyway)
Could they confuse the plot any more... with Earth being put back how it
was, why did they need Arthur's brain so urgently...
.... and a few other bits.
NOW, there's always a trend to blame old fans for not liking a new movie,
saying that they are stick-in-the-muds who would only like the original.
Thing is, with H2G2, die-hard fans are USED to each version being different
and look forward to seeing changes. Radio to book to television, (and game
and that illustrated photoshopped book and...) all different... in fact I'm
certain my copy of the book changes subtly every time I read it, with tiny
word changes and chapters changing order.
All I know is, I was thinking for years, "If they make a movie half as good
as the TV/Radio/Book then it will be a pretty good movie". And that's
exactly what they did. Made one half as good.
I felt like "Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" had been demolished to make
way for a Disney movie.
Still, "Your deaths may be recorded for training purposes" made me chuckle,
and I didn't walk out before the end.
Those are my personal feelings which, for some inexplicable reason, I felt
compelled to type up and post for the world to see. In the time it took to
read this, you could've boiled an egg. I may have saved the lives of
countless chickens, leading to a drastic poultry population explosion which
destroys society. Not a complete waste of a Saturday morning.

What it lacked was the Ford Prefect character that should have been..
the whole point of that part of the scene was he was being a smartarse
to Arthur

New Marvin also lacked something else...the dislike of him by all the other
characters..instead he was turned into a cutesy disney character
I don't think I can stand that robot for much longer, Zaphod

Ford was a guide himself. He showed Arthur the Galaxy and the guide and the
babel fish etc etc. He was the one with all the knowledge because he was an
experienced hitchhiker. In the film however he seemed about as confused as
Arthur.

I don't think he was at all cute. His head was too big - it maybe falls into
the simplistic thinking of the producers category. Marvin has a brain the
size of a planet so should also have a head to match !
Previous Marvins were a bit more funny. He was cleverer than everyone else.
This one just seemed an antagonist.
