| Radio series - I'm confused [message #29524] |

Can somebody explain to me the go with the radio series?
I have in seperate places read that either:
The 2004 radio series is a continuation of 1981 series
or
That the 2004 radio series starts from the beginning of the first
book.
If I want to listen to the radio series from the beginning through to
end, what do I need to listen to first? Will the 2004 series suffice,
or do I need the 1981 series?

If I understand it correctly, the original series was broadcast in
1979(?), and it's now available as the Primary Phase, or Fit 1 through
to Fit 6....
The second series went out (I think) in 1981 and is now available as the
Secondary Phase, or Fit 7 through to Fit 12....
Now, as I understand it, the series broadcast in 2004, the Tertiary
Phase as it is known, or Fit 13 to Fit 18, follows on directly from the
end of the Secondary Phase....
And of course, the current Quandary Phase neatly follows on from the
Tertiary....And the Quintessential Phase will see the entire series come
to a nice and natural conclusion, 27 years after the first broadcast....
I have one question however, which I'm almost embarassed to ask, as I
have a deep suspicion that I will look a fool....
Why were all the episodes referred to as "Fit the first", "Fit the
second" etc etc....Why didn't they just call them Episode 1, Episode 2
etc etc?....

Additional....
I forgot to add that each of the phases roughly corresponds to a book in
the series....However, as the storyline varies so dramatically from
version to version, this is a veeeeeery loose connection....

OK then, so I do need the original two radio broadcasts from the
70s/80s, as this new 2004 version covers the 3rd book and onwards from
that?

Yeah....Like I said though....The connection between phases and books is
a very tenuous one....The story's veer off from each other when you get
to the secondary phase....Can't comment on the tertiary as I havent
heard it yet (E-donkey is still downloading it), and I don't want to
listen to the quandary until I have the full tertiary and have listened
to all of them....

The first two radio series, broadcast in 1978 and 1980, were roughly
speaking turned into the first two books, except that a lot of the
weirder parts of the second radio series got dropped.
The third radio series, from 2004, explains away most of the second
radio series by saying that it was Zaphod having a psychotic episode,
and then closely follows book three, /Life, the Universe, and
Everything/.
The fourth and fifth radio series, which have just started being
broadcast, reportedly follow the fourth and fifth books to some extent,
but will also tie up loose ends from the previous series and,
apparently, finish on a happier note than /Mostly Harmless/.
So, all the radio series follow on from each other, and you should
listen to the earlier series first.

They're named after Lewis Carroll's /The Hunting of The Snark/, which is
'an agony in eight fits'.

The radio series came first with the later books being based on the first
section up to where Arthur and Ford finish up on prehistoric earth. The
third book carries on from here with a different story. So does the second
series which was pretty much dropped as a storyline although parts of it
appear in the first two books.
The third book is what the third series is based on.
The fourth book is what the fourth series is based on.

Spotted one continuity error tho ;) In the Primary Phase Ford tells
Zaphod the extra arm suits him as if he's never seen it before and in
the Tertiary Phase he mentions it was always the same 3 arms going up
in class as if Zaphods always had them. This, and ignoring the Secondary
Phase in the scheme of things made me very very confused indeed while
listening to Tertiary !

In Fit the Eighth, Zaphod tells Ford to "put it there... and there... and
there... and there", which suggests he had four arms by that time.
