My opinions on the movie [message #29313] Mi, 04 Mai 2005 23:18

Hi all,

Just got back from seeing the movie and wanted to make some comments;
these may have already been covered by others but I am curious what others
think also.

I understand the need to make changes for a movie and that doesn't really
bother me,
what bugged me was "Basic Stuff" that was left out that really added to the
feel of DNA's story,
like:

1) Just taking a minute and explaining the importance of carrying a towel
with you,
could have been explained by Ford or learned by Arthur perusing through the
guide, simple dialogue,
would have been better with illustrations from the guide. I think this would
be helpful in drawing
in viewers who may not be familiar with the story already.

2) No Guide Entry for the Earth??? Come on. Easy to do, see above, could
have also been used to
better establish Ford's job as a researcher for the Guide, which I think was
mentioned, but very briefly.

3) The acting. I liked Arthur and Zaphod was okay for me also, sometimes
annoying (not in the funny way)
but still zany so he worked. Having an African-American Ford didn't bother
me, but I agree that the acting could have been
better and the actor mumbled too many of his lines. When Zaphod and Ford
meet on the HOG they hurredly mumble through
their lines of how they are related, like they are embarassed about it or
something, it was strange.
Trillian's character was okay but the acting could have been better also,
especially early on in the HOG when the ship
picks up Ford and Arthur, just a lot of standing around.

4) The new Marvin didn't really do anything for me, I miss the version from
the TV show, which brings me to things I did like:

The cameos of the old Marvin in the Vogon queue (I agree a great line there,
I laughed at it), and of Simon Jones as the Magrathea Warning Recording and
DNA himself at the very end (I am fairly certain). I also liked that they
used the old theme music while introducing the Guide.

So, overall, I guess I liked it. Wasn't blown away by it, wish it could
have been made 10-15 years ago, etc.
I just think they could have done more for the general audience by way of
explication, wouldn't have taken too much more time and
would have helped a lot in my opinion.

Thanks for your time,

-Robert.

Yup. Too much was left out, too much was jammed in.

The impression I got was that they were having a difficult time explaining
how they were related in a way humans would understand.
