Over the last few months I've been making my way through DS9 and now
Voyager in complete broadcast order. I've missed most of each show,
so this has been pretty fun. I'm now at the beginning of DS9's season
4 and VOY's season 2 (both of which started in Fall '95). I wanted to
periodically post little capsule reviews. Keep in mind that I have
not seen most of what's to come on either show. All scores are 1-10.
A word about my ratings:
1-4 means I didn't like it to varying degrees.
5 means it didn't do much for me either way.
6-10 means I liked it to varying degrees.

Lots about this show bugged me at first: the truck in space, finding
humans in the delta quadrant, Amelia Earhart; but after the first 10
or 15 minutes I found myself really enjoying it. The Voyager landing
sequence was fun to see, and I guess I'm a sucker for showing
"primitive" humans 24th century tech (like Lily in First Contact).
The should we stay/should we go angle was not one I expected the
episode to take, which was nice. It reminded me of a fun TOS episode,
which is the last thing I expected from Voyager.

The Kazon officially irritate the hell out of me. They should just
call them "Klingon Lite" and be done with it. Either that or Oompa
Loompas with a gland problem. An ok overall story was hamstrung by
flat acting and silly plot contrivances. Ok, so Chakotay wants to do
a solitary ritual... did his ancient ancestors also travel SEVERAL
LIGHT YEARS away to be alone? What's wrong with a "Do Not Disturb"
sign on your quarters? The show gets a point for having Nog, err,
Kar, unexpectedly kill Kazon #1.

In case you think I give out 10's all willy nilly, this is just the
second "10" I've given DS9. It is, without a doubt, the best I've
seen from DS9 yet. The setup was impressive with a killer payoff.
The action is probably the most frantic I've seen in any Trek, big
screen or small. I felt like this was the show I was waiting for all
of season 3. Worf adds some much needed life to the cast. I was
actually never a huge fan of much of the Klingon political shows TNG
did, but it played out very well here.

And this is the third 10 I've ever given DS9. Color me impressed with
DS9's start to season four. This earns its "10" for completely
different reasons than WOTW. In many ways the feel of the episode
reminded me of my favorite TNG episode, The Inner Light. Having the
plot resolution depend on a father watching his son commit suicide was
genius, and a very moving scene. The fact that Sisko now remembers
his journey is a nice touch. Old Jake captured the mannerisms of
Sisko very well. I enjoyed seasons 1-3 of DS9, but was slightly
disappointed that it wasn't living up to my high expectations. Season
4 seems well on the way to correcting that.
