| Missed it! (first ep of new radio series) [message #27564] |

All the excitement of coming home from work with two big empty tubs of
nothing caused the household to universally forget to press
Play+Record on the cassette recorder. Missed the whole darned 1st
episode on the Radio this evening.
Anyone know when the repeat is on?

That's very kind of you, but unfortunately I don't have the kind of
bandwidth that readily enables the sort of download size that 30mins
of MP3 would entail.
Nice of you to offer, though. Tea?

How big is the mp3? I mean, I'm sure nerds like us will be putting it
up on the gnutella network soon enough but I want to hear it again and
save it away as each ep comes out :)

Oh, I will. No doubt of that. Though knowing me I'll probably buy it
as a present for someone in another hemisphere from me and never
manage to listen to it before posting it around the globe[3].
But the thing about the 1st episode of the 4th wossname is that the
2nd episode is still yet to be aired and I've a chance to
record'n'hear that in the near future.
BUT: All is well with the world. Thanks to the astonishing generosity
of several froupies I'm now the likely recipient of multiple copies
through the post of the episode I missed earlier this week.
You guys rock!

Hi Huggy,
Thanks for putting up the Fit!
I couldn't record it as we're in ireland and can't get Radio 4 on
anything other than ntl and that RealPlayer stream from the Radio 4
site is slightly worse than terrible!!
Don't surpose you'd be kind enough to put the other's on line after
they are transmitted would you?
You are a scholar and I thank you for putting this Fit up :-)

Ok, so the one I downloaded that was called -15, what was that? It's a
different size to the one I've just downloaded called -20...

I use a thing called "Audio Recorder Pro" to record the sound and
NOTHING AT ALL to clean it with. Probably not the best device out there
but it works for me.
Also had to purchase "Audio Splitter & Joiner" and "Audio Converter".
All in all about $60. I'm a Brit living in England and I can't work out
how many squid that is!
Worth the money though as I use it alot.
Here's the link to it - http://www.ezaudiorecorder.com/
Talking of the BBC, why don't they save their stuff as MP3s? Seems I'm
not the only one having trouble with their Real Player!

I use a package called Magix Audio Cleaning Lab....I got it for £10 on
one of those *everything for a tenner* software racks that you see in
bargain bookshops and PC world....
I play guitar and tend to do a bit of recording on an old tape 4-track,
so it's perfect for mastering and enhancing the audio quality....
> Here's the link to it - http://www.ezaudiorecorder.com/
Looks like a nice straight-forward piece of software....Simple is good....
The one I use is on this page (can't get the link to work right cos the
bloody site is a frameset)
http://site.magix.net/index.php?334
I use an older version of it, from about 3 or 4 years ago....I'm
seriously tempted to upgrade....

LOL, probably because it's harder to download a real-stream to your HDD
than it is an MP3....

Well, that's easy to answer: Because mp3 can be downloaded, played, and
sistributed as often as you wish. In theory, the windows media and
realplayer streams can only be played from online.
That is only in theory, of course. Anything you play on your computer
_can_ be recorded. For instance, Audio Recorder Pro simply copies
everything played by the sound card to an audio stream, which can then
be saved to mp3.
In an attempt to stop this, laws are passed making it illegal to decode
encrypted streams (like realplayer and windows media) for any purpose
other than listening to it. These laws make it illegal to use Audio
Recorder Pro on such streams.
In other words: BBC try to make their "Listen Again" features available
for a limited time only. If they made their listen again using mp3, they
would be available forever.
Of course, they are still available forever but only to people who
1) are techie enough to record the stream
2) know someone who is, or
3) get the stream from general filesharing
(like usenet binaries, eDonkey, bittorrent, etc., KaZaa)
but the BBC apparently finds this an acceptable loss.

I often wonder, do they find it an acceptable loss, or do they simply
deem the cost of combatting it too high when compared against the loss?....
I wonder if thats the reason why they've started taking steps to make
their entire archive available to anyone with a valid TV license? (as
discussed in another thread)....So that they at least have some sort of
control over the material, even if it's only control over it's Download
sources?...
Actually, thinking about it, have I just defined the meaning of
'acceptable loss'?....
Have I just argued the same two points against each other?....Like saying
"Which colour do you prefer? Orange, or a Yellowish/Red suffusion?"
I'm rambling senselessly now....
I think my brain needs caffienne....

Mp3 might be distributed as a streaming service too (shoutcast
eg.). However it is a simple task to save the stream as there are so
many tools for handling mp3 out there. The same thing might be said
about Ogg Vorbis.
Real and Windows Media are supposedly closed formats and therefore
must be played with the official players. However other programs might
be able to decode the streams and save them to disk.

Probably that is due to the facts you mentioned above: They cannot
really do anything about it. They can make it as hard to work around
as possible - but not really make it impossible.
