Good morning all,
This is not a movie review...there seem to be enough of them out there
already!
Pull up a nice cuppa tea and settle in...
I was most intrigued by the audience reaction to the film.
Unfortunately, I had to watch the film at 2pm on Bank Holiday Monday,
and the place was packed, mainly with noisy kiddies throwing things at
each other and constantly swapping seats.
However, that said, as soon as the dulcet tones of Stephen Fry were
heard, and the dolphins appeared on screen, the entire place went
silent. It was fantastic! I've never seen chaos to calm happen so fast!
Perhaps they should sell a small device that shows dolphins swimming
under water to the sound of Master Fry's voice as a sedative. Does seem
to work wonders.
The up-side to my little outing was that I viewed the film in Guildford
(I didn't make a special trip or anything, I just happen to live there).
I don't know whether there was any reaction to the 2 mentions of
Guildford whilst being viewed in any other cinema in the UK, but the
(seemingly unknowing audience) reacted with shock the first time (lots
of gasps), and a quite heartily giggle emanated from the audience the
second time :-)
Speaking of unknowing audience, the young lass sat next to me, after
hearing the first mention of Guildford (said quite quietly, I might
add), turned to her equally young friend and asked in an astonished
voice "Did he just say Guildford?". I stopped myself form saying "Yes
dear, and Guildford is also in the opening sequence to the Omen you
know". I must be getting old.
I also overheard another young whipper-snapper, after watching the
trailer to War of the World, turn round to a friend and say "I've heard
that's supposed to be quite a good story". Do kids today not read books?
I'll pause here for a moment of calm.
# drinks more tea #
Having said all that, and noticing how many in the audience laughed in
quite open surprise and enjoyment at some of the jokes, especially the
particularly British jokes smattering their way throughout the movie, it
was really enjoyable to see how much people were enjoying it, and I
hope, will go and buy the books and enjoy them more.
Like a fine red wine, Master Adams work only improves with time.
I will go now and stoke the towel.
For Douglas.

In the two thousand and fifth year of Bob, SJK's voice said the following,
in wonderful perfect quadrophonic sound with distortion levels so low as to
make a man weep:

I haven't read that, either, and I'm not the type who doesn't read books.
I haven't experienced a lot of literary, television or movie phenomena which
many people regard everybody as having read them - for instance, until about
a year ago I'd not watched any Monty Python ever, never seen the Godfather
films, and I've never watched Mary Poppins either.

For the record: I've never read H.G.Wells' "The War Of The Worlds"
either.
But I've seen a fillum version, I've got the Jeff Wayne musical
version on CD, and somewhere on a cassette I've a recording of the
Orson Welles radio wossname which scared the bejesus out of large
sections of the US.

I had the pleasure of introducing a colleague at work to the Monty
Python concept of "crunchy frog" today. She (my colleague) said that
she thought she'd seen all of the Monty Python episodes (she's old
enough to have been able to watch them originally on the telly -
though don't tell her I said that!), but that she didn't recall that
sketch. tappity-tap on her intar-web link-a-thingy on her desk and she
was soon giggling like a giggle-pot at the script. Huzzah!
