All in all, I thought the movie was good. I've seen reviews from long-time
fans that said the movie was nothing like the book, and was therefore
terrible. I've seen reviews from people that never read the book that say
it was all inside humor, and only a long-time fan could enjoy it.
As a fan, I liked it. It wasn't the book, the TV show, or the radio series.
And in fact, none of those three were any of the others either. Things
needed to be changed to make the movie appealing to a wider audience. I
think Douglas understood that, and in fact made many of the changes to keep
the balance right.
I hope the movie does well enough to prompt a sequel. But then, I'll be
most nervous! That will be the first remix of the series without Douglas -
that one will be questionable to the end. (Of course, they're doing the new
radio shows, too, so will those be as critical?)

The best and simplest argument I've seen against the movie is:
Imagine Monty Python... Americanized.
Eeeeeeeew. Says it all, right there.

As a stand-alone movie, it was alright. I wouldn't say "good", but I
wouldn't say "bad". But frankly, as something bearing the name "Hitch
Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy", it left a lot to be desired. That name
represents more than a story, it represents the style in which the story is
told. I found that style depressingly lacking.

I had mixed feelings after seeing the movie. After a few days to reflect,
and read some reviews, I discovered that I went into the movie expecting two
movies. I expected to see a movie that was a perfect reflection of the
series, unadulterated Douglas Adams put into film. I also expected to see a
movie that was almost but not entirely completely unlike the book, changed
to be something that was made for film. I didn't realize I was expecting
these things, which totally conflicted with each other. But afterwards, the
extremely improbable happened - I realized I got exactly what I expected - I
got pieces of Adams done fairly well on screen, mixed with totally changed
stuff. Some of it didn't work, but in general it was a good mix.
I imagine I was happy with the movie because I didn't know what to expect -
I went in thinking anything was possible. For those that went in demanding
pure Adams, they got pure crap. For those wanting a sci-fi comedy similar
to Men In Black In Space, they got pure crap. I expected a little bit of
everything, and got just that.
It's really a Catch-22. Unless you want to personally dedicate millions of
dollars to making a film that aligns with your point of view, you've got to
take what you're given. (Insert unintended point-of-view gun joke here.)
The studio wants to not only make back it's investment, but profit from it -
so you're going to have to appeal to a larger audience. If you don't do
that, the movie doesn't get made, and we complain that it's taking so long
to get the movie made, it's stalled!
I can understand creative criticism of a movie - what worked, what didn't,
what you liked, what you didn't like - but to totally trash a movie because
it didn't fit into your pre-conceived notion of what it should be like is a
waste of time. I'm thrilled to death we got to see this movie. Parts could
have been better, but in the end - nothing you change will please everybody.
Which, I guess was my original point.

If I were Canadian, I'd be totally insulted. I'll be insulted for my

For a starters, there are far more sane people living there.
But yes - Kids in the Hall is hilarious.

You have no idea what you're talking about. This is simply prejudice.
Canada is very much like America, so much so it almost indistinguishable in
many ways. I doubt you've ever visited either.

I've been to America, yes, and I know a *lot* of Canadians and learnt a
lot about the culture. Superficially they might be similar but they are
very *very* different.
It's like saying Australians and New Zealanders are the same.

They are very much similar; I say this having known many of them, including
my Australian best friend from high school. And that's still a whopping
slab of bias regarding Americans on your part. All people are much the same
everywhere. It's the behavior, usually bad, of a few high-profile
individuals that gives an impression of difference, and that difference is
what is superficial. Having vastly more real experience than you on the
subject of Americans and Canadians, I believe your opinion is uninformed.

Heh. They are *similar*, but they are not the same. That was my point.
They speak different, they call things different things. They do the
same things that most humans do (drink, have sex, have jobs, argue, act
like arseholes and do random extraordinary acts of kindness) but they do
have cultural differences. This was my point concerning Canada.

Sorry, it was a joke. Disregard that particular point.

I'm not going to say what provides me with that 'bias', as it'll just
piss people off and cause a shitstorm. I do have a *lot* of American
friends. I've visited the place, become a part of a family there, I
have a deep affection for America.
But it's like loving tigers. You know it's beautiful and majestic but
you also know it can be dangerous and can rip your frigging head off.

You have absolutely no idea of my experiences since I never told you
what experiences I've had. And just because you've had a 'good friend'
that's Australian, it likewise doesn't mean a lot in the 'proof' department.

Having vastly more experience than nearly anybody, anywhere on the
subject of Americans and Canadians, I can say that within the context
of all things earthly, the two peoples are mostly similar. But

Both.
Actually, no. I'll leave that to the likes of Mr. Beeblebrox. I'm just
a Canuck who lives on the edge... of Detroit, who deals with people of
both nationalities nearly every single day every day(who's
redundant?), has crossed the border more times than can be recalled(oh
