Continuity Error [message #23811] Mo, 02 Mai 2005 05:53

The executive producer of the movie in an interview just before the release
stated (paraphrased here) that he was happy about the way the movie turned
out, but he knew there was a continunity error in it. He wouldn't say what
it was, but was sure it would come out very quickly. I'm wondering if
anyone caught it. My only theory is based on a fact of the movie I can't
remember at all:

I can't exactly remember this one part of the movie, but it may be this -- I
think when Zaphod was showing the recording of Deep Thought, he stated that
it was the Magrathians that were searching for the Question, but I'm not
certain of this. (This is different from the book, which of course states
that they were only contracted to build the planet by another race in search
for the question, but with each format of the story changing, it could have
been changed to them searching and building the planet to simplify things
for a movie office - I just can't remember.) If it was in-fact the people
of Magrathia that were searching for the Question, and they existed as mice
in our universe, wouldn't Slartibartfast need to be a mouse (or at least
much smaller) when he first meets Arthur in Arthur's own dimention?

Anyway - can someone with a better memory tell me if that was what the
recording stated? And did anyone catch the continunity error in question,
if this isn't it?

Well, I noticed three. Unfortunately I can only remember two right now:

The signed presidential prisoner release form bears Zaphod's signature, but
there didn't seem to be enough time for Zaphod to sign it. Arthur goes over
to get the form, leaving Ford and Zaphod with the Vogon clerk, fills it in
over there, returns to his waiting friends and hands the completed form to
the clerk directly.

Zaphod mentions that his third arm is missing after the HOG comes under
attack by the thermonuclear missiles. When did he lose the third arm?
Presumably it was removed by Humma along with the second head?

I'll post the other one when it comes back to me.

Would that be there wasn't a bunch of vomit in the can when they
went from doll mode to real mode coming out of improbable warp?

My guess would be that Zaphod, being the kind of president he is, has
presigned the original, so all copies already bear his signature...

I watched the movie a second time, and watched that scene specifically. It
could be argued that "normality" was being restored gradually, because the
shot of the bucket shows the Arthur Dent, but his had is still yarn - like
he's wearing a mitten. So not all the yarn is changing to real at the same
time.

That said, it would have been nice to see the couches gradually change to
Ford and Arthur, instead of just *poof*.

When Vice President Rontok is handed the form, she sees Zaphod's signature
and says "Zaphod's here". If Zaphod had presigned the forms, Rontok would
have had to not know that.

Did you notice whose hand handed her the order to release the prisoner?
Actually, whoever it is didn't hand it to her. The hand handed it to the
unnamed Vogon in charge.

Chiggy.
