awful! bad! terrible! do not, I repeat do not see this movie...
yes, the fabric puppets are funny and the bit in the beginning with the
dolphins fools us into thinking this movie might actually not be so
bad... but they leave out some of the very best Adams and add...?
add--garbage.
The credits say this movie is "For Douglas" For Douglas? For Douglas?
Douglas is turning over in his grave right now, cursing Allen Bell
(director) and Karey Kirkpatrick (the other screenwriter), having a
long, hot soak in his tub with a couple of pints.

Um, just because there's stuff in the movie that wasn't in the books
doesn't mean they made it up completely without douglas' consent... do
you think that the fans of the radio show weren't enraged when the
books were so different? and here you are saying that the books are the
end-all be-all of what douglas adams is. I have read all 5 books
several times, as well as the radio show scripts, and I loved the
movie. Sure, it didn't follow the books verbatim, but it was still a
masterpiece I feel douglas would be proud of.

The added "garbage" was written by Douglas Adams...I'm sure he'd appreciate
knowing his new approach to his own material (which he's done with every
incarnation) is thought to be garbage.

Being Douglas spent 20+ years writing the movie you saw, it's only because
he died 4 years ago that he can't explain that to you in person.

So many harsh replies to this e-mail. It's honest and whilst I believe
everyone should go to the cinema to see the movie, I still think this
persons's view stands up.
It IS a bad movie, and those long time posters on here know i've been a
fan of DNA for a good many years.
It was kinda fun but it wasn't Douglas Adams at all, sure some of the
extra bits were wrote by him, and I'm not going to whine about how they
cut some (absolutely brilliant) bits out, in the end it's how they've
translated the jokes that remained and the new material in to a film.
What it boils down to is, for fans and non-fans... it wasn't a brilliant
film and I'd go as far as to say it was bad.
It had severe pacing and plot problems. It didn't make much sense to me,
so god help people who aren't fans of h2g2. The majority of the jokes in
it were plain not funny. It was like a story told in the Hitchhiker's
universe but it wasn't hitchhikers.
There were some great bits... any bits featuring the Guide, Marvin was
cool, the Vogon's looked awesome.
But at least Jim Carrey wasn't Ford Prefect eh?

Mars Attacks was okay, and I only think Alien IV was horrible (or has
there been an Alien V I haven't seen?) As for Star Trek, at least two, yes.

Nonsense. M.J. Simpson is one of the world's leading experts on Douglas and
his work and he couldn't have hated it more. You can read his reviews at
www.planetmagrathea.com or at the link just below, where it is reprinted in
full by permission. I recommend the long version.
I can only surmise that people who think it resembled the books/radio
plays/TV shows in any way simply weren't paying much attention and never
really "got" it in the first place. The movie is an abomination.

My fiancee is one of the world's leading experts on me that doesn't make
her always right. The Pope is the world's leading expert on Catholics,
does that mean you can't disagree with him? Just because someone is an
expert it doesn't mean they are right. I'd like to know what other
experts such as his family think. I'd also like to know what others who
have writeen books about DNA such as Neil Gaiman think.

Good on you, Rob! That's telling it like it is. I think it's bloody
obvious Simpson was done and bored with h2g2 and let his loss of that spark
cloud his opinion. I loved the movie, and the Guide is better off for its
being made.

I don't have blue skin (except that time I had blue paint spilled on me).
I don't have trouble leaving pubs, there's usually a brutish man who nicely

And not only does he feel that his opinion is the only correct one, his

Who says this guy is the words leading authority on Douglas
Adams?....Himself, presumably, and a band of sheep have decided to agree
with him....
Okay, he may know more about DNA's private life than me, but frankly, I
don't care much about DNA's private life....I enjoy the stuff he wrote,
but I couldn't care less what he got up to in his spare time....Why
would I?....His private life was private....That's what private means....
So on summary, was he more of an expert about the publicaly available
versions of Douglas Adams' works?....
I sincerely doubt it, and I would challenge the claims that he was....
It sounds to me more like he was a borderline stalker who made a living
off the back of someone elses success....

A reputable journalist and former editor of SFX if I recall correctly.
Doesn't make him right or wrong - personally I agreed with a lot of his
opinions but found the critique somewhat overwrought, he seemed too close
to it to even approach objectivity.
And no, his opinion doesn't influence mine - and nor should that of any
good journalist. Happy to be set thinking by something they write...

Agree with you on that...Good journalism or writing should inspire
further thought and discussion....
<Oolon Quoloophid>
The problems come when people take a persons writing as some sort of
mantra....Then we get into the realms of the bible....An ancient book of
very good short stories, which a bunch of people took a tad too
literally, and as a result of which, spent the next few thousand years
persecuting, torturing, and going to war with other people.

"Himself" is quite right, himself being of course Douglas Adams, who,
while alive, claimed that MJ Simpson knew a lot more about him (that is
Douglas Adams) then he (again, Douglas Adams) did himself (yes, still
Douglas Adams, otherwise this sentence wouldn't make much sense, would it?).

Yes, but where's the point in knowing everything there is to know about
another person...It's more than just a little bit creepy if you ask me....
Much better to base your knowledge on that persons works....Far more
practical, and much less creepy....
