Old and New Marvin [message #23586] Sa, 30 April 2005 07:05

I hope this hasn't been covered extensively, but did anyone notice that
the old Marvin from the BBC TV series was in the room with all the
lines & forms on the Volgon planet? They showed him several times. I
had expected some applause from the audience but I guess not many there
has seen that production.

I was glad at how much screen time he was given (at least a half a dozen
shots included him).

I had read ahead of time that he was looked for and found by the production
in the BBC archives, he was cleaned up and rewired and I have to say he
looks absolutely great! He has a whole new lease on life. ("Oh no, not
another one.")

Also, I hope you noticed, Simon Jones (the "original" Arthur Dent from the
Radio & TV Series) played the Magrathean "hologram"!

They must've replaced all the diodes down his left side. :)
(they left those lines out of the new version)

Yes, I did, but the friends I was with (both of whom noticed the original
Marvin) didn't.

My 10 year old son pointed that out to me. (not kidding)

No wonder - every previous Marvin was old, decrepit and under-maintained.
Not shiny and new like the movie one seems to be (haven't seen the movie
yet).

I also notice the movie one has a huge head. Don't modern audiences
understand metaphor? "Here I am, brain the size of a planet" doesn't mean "I
have a huge head".

I actually think the movie got that part of him right - my understanding
was that Marvin, like the Heart of Gold, was brand spanking new, with
enormous amounts of development resources devoted to making him look
shiny, new, polished, etc, and no resources whatsoever devoted to making
him happy :-)
