Need a review of meta-DNA books [message #23400] Di, 26 April 2005 01:51

Yup, re-catching DNA fever again. Last night I loaded Dirk Gentley onto
my palm, and in the 10 years that's passed since I read it, it's
amazing how many more of the jokes I got.

So, I rushed out and bought salmon of doubt, and all the bits in there
were good too. Also recently eBayed for starship titanic (game and
guide). I have to say that the book isn't nearly as horrid as everyone
made it out to be--the characters showed a lot of emotions that DNA
couldn't have pulled off.

Anyways, there's nothing left that DNA didn't write, and I'm
considering some last resorts. Can anyone review Don't Panic,
Hitchhiker (biography), and that official biography?

For humour and so on, go with "Don't Panic". In fact, I'd recommend that
very much.

Hitchhiker needs a dedicated fan to enjoy all of it. It's _packed_ with
information, really packed. Everything you wanted to know, but
unfortunately maybe even a little more. Still very much worth reading.

As for the official biography I found it rather bland, somehow. To be
honest, I haven't even completed it. However, this may be because I
started reading it immediately after MJ Simpsons book, and I had simply
had enough. I guess the writing style is a bet smoother in the official
biography, but it's a little too subjective for me, I guess. Strangely
non-Douglas-Adams'y to me.

Absolutely you want this, the latest version if possible. (There have
been three editions.)

I would agree here. I have read it, just the once. Yes, probably more
than you need to know, but not necessarily bad. Not just a feel-good
whitewash at all. A lot of research went into that book, and it shows.

I haven't read this one. I can see how this reaction would make sense,
though.

I don't remember the original post. Does everything that DNA wrote
include the radio scripts? Because the radio scripts book has a fair
amount of meta info in it. I particularly remember reading the 10th
Anniversary edition (a silly title; it was released in the US 10 years
after the original publication of the scripts in the US. Hehe.) And
I'm particularly pissed off that I left that copy on a plane some years
ago and have never been able to replace it. Was there not a rerelease,
though, that included the 10th Anniversary info? I can't remember.
Some meta in there. I haven't read it, but the 25th Anniversary HHGG
book also has a bit of meta info. There's one more book too, the
Pocket Essential Hitchhiker's Guide. Majority of its info should be
contained in Don't Panic, though, really, or the Hitchhiker bio. But
it is one more piece of the puzzle.

As far as I know, the tenth anniversary copy was just the first one coming
back into print with a spangly cover. Might have had a new introduction,
I'm unsure.

The 25th anniversary copy is the first one with a cast list and other
miscellaneous writings by M.J. Simpson, Fit the Sixth-and-a-halfth, and an
extra introduction.

I think the 25th anniversary copy's the best, having read both it and the
original copy (my local library's got it, it's great).

I think there may be two different 25th anniversary thingies. Sounds
like you're talking about a 25th anniversary radio scripts book, which
I haven't seen, but I vaguely remember exisiting. I have here in the
house a 25th Anniversary slightly illustrated book one of the trilogy
which has some intro material at the beginning. I don't think it's the
same thing. Or is it? Not sure. I don't have time to go look at what
I have right now because I'm off to see the movie. ;-)

I have too, after seeing the movie, buying the CD (!!!) and getting hooked
on That Song. I just bought Salmon of Doubt, too.
