Celeborn executed him for inventing submarines, I believe. Or for
living in a yellow one.

It was a cruel deed. All Cousteaumir wanted to do was sail down the Anduin
in his submarine and then travel to Aman in it. Instead, he and his
assistant Nemo were beheaded by the envious Celeborn.

Cousteaumir invented the aqualung.
