Fascinating interview with actress Eva Renzi on the splendid L UCCELLO
DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO DVD in which the actress states that, after
starring in FUNERAL IN BERLIN, Harry Saltzman offered her the role of
Helga Brandt and was turned down because Renzi because "didn't want
to be a fucking Bond girl." This, according to Renzi, sent Saltzman into
a rage and he asked if she "thought she was Elizabeth Taylor!" and, as
he had her under contract, kept her locked in it, effectively hindering
her flourishing career at that point.
She states with a degree of bitterness that her role in L UCCELLO
DALLE PIUME CRISTALLO, taken three years later, was a career-killer.
Although she states with some regret that she shouldn't have been so
headstrong with Saltzman, she doesn't regret not taking the role, which
ultimately went to fellow German Karin Dor, a cult actress because of
the work she did *outside* of Bond in numerous German "Krimi" films
and the SHATTERHAND AND WINNETOU westerns.
Eva Renzi died not long after the interview was filmed.

She has a pretty daughter who is also an actress. I highly recommend
L'UCCELLO DALLE PIUME DI CRISTALLO if you haven't seen it. Not only
is Renzi in it, but also quintenessential 60's dolly-bird, Suzy Kendall.
It's also a landmark gialli and the BU DVD is the best treatment of it
yet.

OMG, I saw "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" so many years ago!. My
Italian is a bit rusty, so I didn't recognize the title. Creepy film, and
excellent review Paul. Well done.
Glad to see it's on DVD, I'm gonna NF queue it right now.

A man of taste. I've taken delivery of the lovely Scandinavian DVD of
Duccio Tessari's memory-themed L'UOMO SENZA MEMORIA this week.
Makes a hell of a difference after years of watching the old battered
Greek VHS I had of it.

You've gotten me in a giallo frame of mind now. I've added "The Fifth
Cord" and "Black Belly of the Tarantula" to my Zip.ca queue. DVD is a
godsend for getting good prints of obscure cult items.

Thank you, thank you. The picture and sound quality on the Blue
Underground DVD are truly superb. You will not be disappointed. And the
Argento interview is one of the few DVD extras that actually enhance
your understanding of the film, as opposed to the usual puff pieces.

You've got XXX and the future Rene Mathis starring in BLACK BELLY OF
THE TARANTULA! Get hold of George Lazenby (dubbed and skinny) and
Adolfo Celi in Aldo Lado's WHO SAW HER DIE? also freely available and
Claudine Auger in Mario Bava's influential REAZIONE A CATENA (aka
TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE).
Keep it in the Bond family!
