Following on from Warrior of Rohan's "books about Tolkien" and "Tolkien
scholars" threads, here is a thread about all those Tolkien websites out
there!! As there are a lot, this should be something like a top 20,
instead of the normal "top 10".

I did actually struggle to find 20 good websites, and I haven't looked
in detail at all of these. I tried to get a good cross-section, but I'm
sure there are lots more good websites out there.

on line.
In the mean time, content can be accessed at the Internet Wayback

The latest update in the IWM is 2004-11-29. I don't know whether this
means that the site hasn't been updated in a year and a half, or that
the specific home page hasn't been updated in that time.

Can't go wrong here, while it isn't updated as often as I'd like you
can be rest assured the site and publications are full of quality,
informative content.

Not sure on this one, it=E2=80=99s a nice design but lacks updating and
much content.

While movie-oriented (gasp) one can still sift through the news to
find some nice items.

tolkienbooks.net far surpasses it in their book library and the
collectibles side has too many gaps to be given much credit.

Great articles, if only we could get Pieter to update more

I wouldn=E2=80=99t worry too much about it. The whois states it was updated
today and the name servers are most likely still propagating. If
archive.org fails Google cache is another good bet.

Thanks for the comments. Would be good to see a website that gave a
brief guide to 100 or so Tolkien websites, or even all of them!

I like this one as well. It's a wiki isn't it? I found it from the
Tolkien pages at Wikipedia (the featured Tolkien articles on Wikipedia
are good as well - I think they are the ones on Tolkien, Middle-earth,
and The Lord of the Rings). It would be good to see some of the fan
history documented on a wiki - this is the sort of thing that Wikipedia
would probably reject.

Thanks for those. Sadly I find I only have time for one set of forums
(these ones obviously!), though it would be nice if some of these forums
did digests - hell, it would be nice if these forums did digests! :-)

Wow. Lots of stuff there. Browsing that, I came across the Gary S.
Hunnewell collection, which has lots of the obscure Tolkien fanzines I
was mentioning in another thread:

It appears to have moved, with a new domain name.
http://www.encyclopedia-of-arda.com. Hooray!
This is not to be confused with a very similarly named website which is
a ripoff commercial site. Unfortunately that one does come above the
rankings of the "real thing" in Google, which I suspect might be why the
legit site now has a new, more meaningful domain name. So, everybody go
and visit http://www.encyclopedia-of-arda.com and help boost its
rankings!
