It has now become obvious that there's no way I can afford the time or

Very, very sad to hear that, Rocky. I had looke forward to meeting you -
as I am sure had quite a lot of other people. Sorry you can't make it,
and I hope you will be able to get over here sometime soon.

Aww. I'll have to catch you some other time. Perhaps we can arrange to get
together with peachy next time you're on this side of the country.

That's a shame - I was looking forward to meeting you. Hope you'll be
able to make it over at some other point.

I met you once at a London meet, Rock, and I was looking forward to enjoying
your company again. It's a damn shame. We'll miss you. But there'll probably
be another in two years so hopefully you'll make that one.

The team bringing you DWCon 2006 won't be doing it again in 2007,
because these things take 2 years to organise, so we'll be back again
in 2008.

Darn, I'd just got to the point (at the other chronological extreme of
the my still unread messages on this newsgroup) where you'd said you
were attending.
Doesn't make my hopes any less dashed without the extended expectation.
I feel sure I would have enjoyed meeting you in person, as others have
expressed.
How about we consider it merely delayed... To the future!

Um. Didn't you get the memo? Pterry has halved his book production, so
they've decided to double the Con production. No worries 'eh?

Let me tell you the sort of incredible people we have in our midst:
One of us afpeople has offered to send me GBP 600 so I can come to the
Con. I'm literally overwhelmed by this. As generous as this is, I'm
afraid it's not enough to get me there and back and cover the expenses
while there and also the necessary expenses of having somebody here care
for my mother while I'm gone. Mother is going to be 93 in August and
shouldn't be left without somebody here to keep an eye on her.
Mom is the only reason I'm living in Tulsa, one of the few places in the
civilized (1) world where I can't make a decent living (2). If I live
longer than she does and I'm still relatively healthy, I will probably
sell everything and move to Europe. I'm thinking of checking out The
Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Ireland if that comes to pass

As am I, seeing as I'd be most upset with Rocky for entrusting a thing

Apologies: I am now using Seamonkey and I'm not yet completely familiar
with it. I didn't mean to send the message yet, was just trying to spell
check "Luxembourg," since it didn't look right to me.
Feetnote:
(1) for extremely forgiving values of "civilized."
(2) Tulsa is the living epitome of Blake's caution about non-support of
the Arts. It's also arguably the Televangelist Capital of the World.
These two things seem to spring from the same source: the majority of
the denizens are shallow and lost, content to follow the common "Santa
Claus" definition of Deity rather than to explore and question.

Other than getting familiarised with it, how do you find Seamonkey for
Usenet use, compared to what you used before? I'm sure others would be
interested in your findings.

I'm having exactly the same sort of hangups and lockups as before, with
Netscape, but some of the annoying "features" are missing and it has an
integrated Mail program, so I like it better. I think the problems are
from an injured motherboard, which I'm about to replace.
I'm hoping to never have to use Netscape again, since I think it comes
from idiots.

It's also high summer -- just a few degrees more can make a big difference
in how often weak components crash. (As you're mechanically adept, I'm sure
you go in and kill the dust bunnies every now and then, which helps.)

Netscape from Netscape (jwz and company) wasn't bad, for its time.
Netscape after it became Sun/AOL is a different story -- yes, those suck.
