As, sadly, did Syd's Pink Floyd, and much too soon in both cases.
Very sad news.

Indeed. Syd was a far more influential figure than he's often been
given credit for, and the tabloid reduction of him to a mere
acid-casualty curio is unfair. What happened to him was sad, but it
shouldn't be allowed to obscure the fact that he shone more brightly
over the course of a very short career than many others manage to do
over a lifetime.
Best

I told someone that the song "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" was a tribute of
sorts that Waters and Gilmour wrote for "Wish You Were Here." They said it
was untrue. Anyone know if that is accurate?
Tom Zielinski
"Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you
prisoner, and shine..."

There are plenty of sources that confirm that "Shine on.." and much of
Wish you were here" was written by the band for Barrett who were
lamenting their missing mate. I've also read that when the band was
recording that particular track (ie Shine on) that Barrett showed up at
the studio. Because he was rather fat and had shaved his eyebrows the
rest of the band did not initially recognize him. He was welcomed in
but the meeting was short and bittersweet since Syd was still suffering
from mental illness.
If you listen to the first Floyd album which was Barrett's brainchild
you will see how he influenced the band through out its career even
though he wasn't there. Truely a sad loss.
Regards,
Matt

At Live 8, Waters dedicated 'Wish You Were Here' to Barrett.
To me, it's like the 'You're So Vain' question: if the song / album
isn't about this person, then who *is* it about? (As an aside, Mick
Jagger once said that one of the great things about being seen as a
cynical and insincere showman is that he can slip deeply personal
thoughts into songs and yet nobody recognises them as such. Listen to
'Memo from Turner' considering that Marianne Faithfull had recently
suffered a miscarriage and it's quite a shock.)
I think there's also little question that the protagonist of 'The Wall'
has more than a touch of Syd about him.
Funny thing is, after 'Piper' and especially after 'Meddle' I think I
enjoy Floyd more as a soap opera than as a band!
Best
Phil

First and only? Certainly not! He was on "A Saucerful Of Secrets" as well.
Don't remember which of the 7 tracks he's on, but I do remember "Jugband
Blues" (obviously), "Set The Controls" (though his guitar part was
apparently scrapped), and "See Saw".

Thanks Steve, I stand (er um sit) corrected. You are right.
