A review disc of the OHMSS Ultimate Edition arrived in my letterbox ten
minutes ago (at time of writing).
A full review will be published on my website soon (watching the movie
tonight via my video projector and listening to it through a 5.1 audio
system).
In the meantime, I can confirm that OHMSS is complete and uncut i.e:
The shot of the cable car shadow is there.
The stock car sequence is complete.
Bond's line, "I told you that crowd would discourage them" is there.
Blofeld's 'closed shop' line is there.
(for Andrew at Lazenbyland - the trailer is still the short version)
Having only done a spot check and listen to the disc, the picture is nothing
short of amazing with regard to resolution and colour. The passages of
remastered 5.1 audio I listened to were, for the most part, much more
dynamic than I would have thought possible. Barry's music score really comes
into its own with one notable exception - the scene in the Gumbold office.
I'll explain in detail in my review proper.
Watch this group.
cheers,
Blofelds Cat

Great stuff! Thanks for that. Now, I wonder if the location cards are
burned in or machine generated on the other titles?

Can I persuade you to do a screenshot taken from the movie? I would very
much like to compare with the HD version.

Ultimate?

Presumably the other advantage the HD versions would have, and
I imagine you can confirm this, is the location cards
(e.g. "Bratislava, Czechoslovakia") are all the original burnt in
versions seen during theatrical presentation?

A terribly daft and naive question, I know, but one which I don't think
I've seen addressed yet:
Do the 'Ultimate Editions' restore the contemporary UA logos at the
beginning of the films and do they restore the original 'James Bond
will return in...' endings?
I'm sure for various corporate reasons that the former would be out of
the question, and that the latter would be avoided for fear of causing
confusion among casual DVD buyers. However, while these are peripheral
points, I'd really like to see the films exactly as they would have
been seen by their original audiences.
(OK, minus the dodgy print quality, the appalling sound, and the smell
of stale urine and the chewing gum on the seats that I remember from
the cinemas where I saw my first Bond films...)
Best
Phil
