I own the hardcover version of "The Last Hero". I see in the APF that
the paperback version has many new illustrations. Are these new as in
additional, or new as in replacements?
Assuming that one does not have unlimited spending money, and is not
*unusually* obsessive about collecting stuff (*somewhat* obsessive,
yes, of course, but I do know where to draw the line -- usually), is it
worthwhile pursuing a paperback copy of TLH to sit beside the HC on the
shelf?
Re: the APF. Contrary to the information there, Dave Bowman never
utters the phrase "My god, it's full of stars" in the movie "2001". He
*does* say it in the novel (just before he enters the monolith), and
the phrase is repeated in the sequel "2010" (both book and movie), but
it's never heard in the original movie. (In fact, Bowman's last words
in the original film are his encouragement to HAL to sing "Daisy" while
Bowman is disconnecting HAL's higher functions.)

New, but not many.

I feel the same about collecting (and not having an unlimited suply of
money) and I bought the paperback last year as an addition to my Deluxe
Edition. Just to see the new illustrations. Well... it sits in my shelf ever
since... The reasonable response would be: No. But I'd do it again ;-)
By the way: Am I the only one who hates the way the illustrations are
treated in TLH and the Art of DW and some others? Streched over the spine of
the books so that you can't see the details in the center of the picture and
the overall impression is totally ruined :-(
Especial in the paperback of TLH which is promoted as having new
illustrations. They are all double pages and they all have the main element
in the center of the picture which is crippled by the spine.
The only Discworld book I've seen that found a better way was the German
translation of GURPS DW. The DW map is printed in one chapter over 1 and a
halve page and the picture ends half an inch before the spine and is
continued an inch to the right on the next page.
Yours Jens

Additional.

Possibly. I haven't. The main ones I noticed when browsing
were the Scream parody (which appears cropped on the cover
and, er, even more cropped inside. Its full effect is seen
only in Art of Discworld) and the Sistine chapel parody, which
is brilliant (a line drawing version can just about be seen in
the hardback, behind the text on pp144-145).

No, I found that extremely irritating as well. I felt the art in the book
was ruined by this treatment. What's the point in putting out an
illustrated story book, then screw up the art work in the production? :p

I've always assumed it's to stop people cutting out the illustrations and
selling them on Ebay in a cheap frame. ICBW though.

Nah. Cutting them out is the only way of seeing them properly...
