Yeah, I know, old joke. If you want an interesting take on history and
freedom, read a copy of the original magna carta. I think wikipedia.org
has it. It's a rather interesting snapshot on history and divine
priveleges. And the occasional really odd complaint.

Well, religion has indeed been the last refuge of a great many
ex-scoundrels, but presumably you are referring to those who abuse religion
for selfish ends; no argument there. Nevertheless, I wouldn't put it as
high as second place; not when we have Politics.

Personally, I don't have any problems distinguishing them. But for those
whose principal, or only, exposure to religion is through televangelists,
you have a very valid point.

I think you must be scanning me. After I heard Ken Lay talk about what a

I'm *still* hearing them. I think I've managed to develop PTSD this year
from it.

How much exposure to televangelists do you get in .uk? In .au we get
practically none whatsoever, unless you watch television between about
4am and 6am when everyone else is asleep. I think Australians are more
likely to learn about televangelists through media clips about how
awful televangelists are, than from televangelists.
On the few occasions that I've actually watched a televangelist (I do
lots of things for research purposes), I've rarely if ever seen them
do the things they're mostly criticised for, such as talking a lot
about money and how much God approves of it. I'm not disputing that a
lot of prominent televangelists /do/ promote that message, but I'm
saying that we get very little direct exposure to them. Not a
complaint, btw.
An example of a televangelist that I've watched at least once is Joyce
Meyer. I didn't watch enough to get a grip on her philosophical
biases, when I was watching but she didn't say anything that raised my
blood pressure at all. What stuck most in my memory is the way she
decorates the stage as though it were a funeral, but I'm almost sure
that's not actually a heresy.
Adrian.

Personally, almost none, since I don't watch television. But sometimes I'm
out a-visitin'.
When I was a kid, if we got a visitor, the TV went /off/. Immediately. No
questions asked, no appeal, tough cheese. Conversation, it seemed, was
killing the art of television, or so I tried to explain to my parents at
the time. (I was already hooked, you see?)
Nowadays, it seems, this excellent tradition has died. As a result, one is
exposed to TV when on a visit, in much the same way that one gets exposed
to radioactivity when one visits a nuclear incident site, and in each case
one just prays one doesn't get a fatal dose.
So - I sometimes see televangelists on friends' sat/cab TV on a so-called
"God channel". The UK version is a lot mellower than the frenetic US style
that is such a cliche', but even so the underlying message was very clear:
Send... Money...
I found it sickening. It is the responsibility of the Church to support its
own work. Asking people for money so that you can buy grain and farming
tools to ship to Africa is fair enough; no man is an island, and we all
have a responsibility to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Asking
people for money so that you can make the payments on your Vauxhall Metoo
and carry on playing at television for another year is *not* fair enough.
It's exploitation, impure and simple.

I heard the news of Ken Lay's death on the radio last Wednesday, as I
was driving to work to show "Enron - The Smartest Guys In The Room".
Thoroughly recommended viewing...
