First, the reminder for the Meet Number Two - it is this
coming Wednesday, 05 July 06, at 11:30 am, at Benny's
Bagels on Broadway. Remember to bring your Pratchett
paperback as a badge of recognition. The password is:
"Is this the right place?"

Jessie & April met at the Cafe du Soleil on Saturday
01 July 06 at 1:00 pm ish for Meet Number One.
Commercial Drive was insane. Canada Day Celebrations
were taking place in every little bit of green space, and
enthusiastic World Cup watching was going on inside and
outside of every little coffee shop, gelato shop, tourist
trap, and European-style market - in fact any place that
could rig up any kind of a TV.

We knew that Portugal must have won its morning game,
because cars bearing Portugese flags were driving up and
down The Drive hootling their horns while all the occupants
sang versions of neener neener neener. However, once
the Brazil/France game was over, Jessie & I were
convinced that Brazil had won because cars bearing
Brazilian flags began driving up and down the drive,
hootling their horns, and singing versions of yay hurrah
woo hoo, while the fans that seemed to be identifiable
as French seemed to be drooping along very sadly.

So, Jessie's efforts to park close by were frustrated
and frustrating, and it was very warm. However, we
tried the raspberry smoothies - mine with soy milk
and Jessie's with apple juice. Yum.

We talked mostly about job-related stuff.

April.

Pity I missed it. We spent part of the afternoon listening to Fado [1] at
the jazz festival. When the singer did the usual bit after the first number
of introducing the band and saying that it was a lovely day, she also
pointed out that Portugal had won, and we all applauded enthusiastically
though most of the audience were probably a lot more interested in jazz than
in soccer. She also said that she felt sad about England, which I thought
was nice of her.

[1] The Sara Marreiros Quintet - really good.

I'll be thinking enviously of you all having fun while I'm slowly roasting
in my little concrete cubicle laughingly known as my office.

I was so overheated that I think mine evaporated on the way down. It was
good while it lasted though.

Here in Oklahoma, where the weather around July 4th is normally
"Bake-Oven," it has been quite cool at night and comfortable during the
day. This contrasts with 114 degree f. temps at midnight back in the
late 70s.

Must be that there global warming.
