I see you are still in China learning Chinese and looking for
Pratchett friends :-)

Hope all is going well over there.

Learning Chinese? That looked pretty good to me. Mind you, I couldn't
understand a single word/character so it's entirely possible that it
said "Two portions of chicken fried rice with extra soy sauce and a copy
of any book by Pratchett, please".

All I got was question marks :0(

And this after I friended the 'character a day' community in
Livejournal, too.

Since the message wasn't tagged (not that I remembered to add a tag) I
responded in Chinese asking the person why they come to afp looking for
foreigners to make friends with since, in China, I had never met a
Chinese person who liked reading Pratchett.

(Has Pterry been translated into Chinese?)

Pretty well... my life has gotten very simple these days. I study
Chinese and I ride my bike. Sometimes I study Chinese while riding my
bike. But I can't get enough decent (and thumpy and fast) Chinese pop
songs to fill up even a 20km training ride...so I mostly listen to
English instead.

The individual also posted to alt.romance, comp.lang.c++ and
soc.culture.iranian. It's an eclectic mix, I must admit.

Balance of probability is that there's something suspicious here.

I have no idea but I'll know a man who does. I'll ask.

And a very nice Mr Smythe came back almost immediately with an answer:

Amazing Maurice and Wee Free Men have been published (under different
titles, of course) in Taiwan by Global Kids Books/Commonwealth.

Science Fiction World have contracted a number of Discworld titles for
publication in mainland China but none have so far been published that
he is aware of.

I'd volunteer to help with the task but I'm not up to fluent English to
Chinese translation (yet).

well you start with the two short stories on L-Space web and work your
way sideways from there.

You might want to see just how good the current translators are then.
:-) I've just heard that The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic
will be published in August by Science Fiction World Magazine in
mainland China.

Hmm, now that's an idea. I've got approximately 1600-1700 zi so I'm on
par with your average well educated Chinese 12 year old. I can read
the tabloids and don't have any big problem in chatrooms (other than
speed) but the real newspaper is still mostly beyond my comprehension.

I've been meaning to get my hands on a Chinese copy of Harry Potter
since it's basically geared at my (current) level and apparently
Rowling's funny names like Kreacher have been well translated with
extra levels of punnery that other Chinese language students have told
me are fun to explore.

Word play is an art form over here.
