I'm new to this group so if this has been discussed please disregard
why exactly did no one think of using a Homorphus Charm to help Prof. Lupin

Because nobody knows how to do one. The wizard who invented it was mind-wiped
by Lockhart, who never actually learned to do it himself. His books are full
of claims but apparently they don't give anything but ordinary charms that
could be found in any good spell encyclopedia.

Well, for starters, I wouldn't allow anyone to cast a charm that was
"homo" anything. Let's face it, Lupin doesn't appear to be the most
masculine character, no point in taking chances with a "homo" spell.
(Now I'm sure to be flamed! I'm just kidding! In a silly mood. My
cold-turkey tequila abstinence lasted all of two days! That's a new
record for me, I think.)

No tequila for two days??? My GOD D how did you manage???? I would go insane
without my well stiffed margaritas...
Although it might have made the fanfic I just read a little easier to take..
Lupin, in the kitchen, taking breakfast up to Tonks.. and he had no shirt
on.
And someone please tell me what in the HELL is *bangers*?? Some sort of food
I gather since it was on the breakfast tray, lol.. but I don't feel like
looking it up. No telling what would show up if I googled BANGERS...
Potatoes? that was the only thing missing from a "hefty breakfast" that was
listed as being seen on the tray, lol.

Well whoever wrote the story listed sausages too, lol.. so obviously they
had heard the term and threw it in without knowing what it meant..
"There seemed to be more food piled on it than even the most ravenous
werewolf could possibly eat. First of all, there were two plates. Two
plates, two forks, two spoons. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, bangers,
toast, a tea service, and.chocolate sauce?"
And since I am probably committing a MAJOR faux paus by copying that in
here, the credit goes to:
http://www.checkmated.com/story.php?story=7321
(I hope the author forgives me if she discovers this.. I really am enjoying
the story, and that is saying alot because I generally do NOT LIKE fanfic!)
Don't get me started on the chocolate sauce....
And take my word for it.. do not Google "Bangers" if your kids are near your
computer, LOL. I went ahead, and yes, it's sausages.. but whooooooboy what I
had to dig through to find that out..

Agreed...but the greatest wizard of the age ... ( Dumbledore ) must have
known about the Homorphus Charm or the fact that that Lupin could have been
helped .... and after all the feat was demonstrated in Defence Against the
Dark Arts (CS10).

In addition to the explanations already given, it's also possible that
there is no such thing outside of Lockhart's imagination.

The story itself is a George/Luna relationship. Sounds odd at first but the
author makes it work, and it's written extremely well. I got into that one
and another on there today that I literally could not put down. I do not
know if they are all that well done, but the site does seem to have some
certain standards for quality; unlike other fanfic forums. It seems maybe to
be a more adult group of writers. I don't dare start reading anything else
or I would be up all night.

Plus, there might be a time limit on it. Only recent werewolves can

In the US, 'bangers' are those who - shall we say - 'use their
sausages'.... metaphorically speaking, of course!

Now see, I googled the following (with safesearch off even)
and didn't get any of that:
http://www.google.com/search?q=bangers+food
or
http://www.google.com/search?q=breakfast+bangers
Another useful query:
http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Abangers
sometimes it's just a matter of having other words in there
for context.
I do *not* recommend doing an image search for it though.

The story that cropped up from that link was about George and Luna. And I
enjoyed it too! The idea of those two making a couple seemed like a good
fit. How does this site work? Where can I find the Lupin/Tonks story?

There was no Lupin Tonks story.. if you read the George/Luna one, that was
where the bit about Lupin taking breakfast to Tonks was. The home page to
that site is:
www.checkmated.com
Sign up (you won't get spam) or not.. your choice. You can read all you want
even if you don't register, but if you register, you get to comment on
stories, which usually means encouraging someone to continue a good story.
The one titled "Harry Potter and the Secret Horcrux" is also a good one.
THAT one sucked in my 15 year old fanfic snob. He has NEVER read a fanfic
through; hates all of it. .etc etc, lol.. but he loved that one. (I bribed
him to read it because I knew he would like it, lol) It's still in progress
so not finished yet. That is the only part I don't like about these! They
post them as they finish a chapter which often means you get left hanging
for awhile.

I gave it a quick read and it got me thinkign something I've considered
before:
"Oh, and Lupin and Tonks are definitely shagging." (around chapter 4)
A werewolf is in some way contagious even in the human form: Greyback
did managed to hurt Bill. It might be due to a) teeth, b) saliva. If
it's b, then, it's also dangerous all kind of fluids? blood, semen...?
One wonders why Remus think he is so dangerous for Tonks...
ANd I agree with George: "Odd couple, anyway," he observed. "He’s so
dull, and she’s so…not.". Lupin might drag her to his dullness eventually.

That's the thing that does bug me with some fanfics in that you'll get
someone hook into a really good premise then they won't finish it off, aside
from that they're not bad. One of the more interesting stories I've read
there is Spirits in the future.
http://www.checkmated.com/story.php?story=6456
Certainly an interesting premise.
One thing about Checkmated though is that if you do sign up and you are old
enough you can access the Bedchamber section where they have the more ...
risque ... stories. Some aren't much better than cheap porn but there are a
few others that are really quite good and Checkmated seems to have pretty
stringent submission guidelines.

LOL yeah I wondered about that too. Apparently it's not in the rules of the
site to remain totally logical in writing yoru story. I really liked the
rest of it though.

Yes, they do have VERY stringent guidelines, which makes it more pleasurable
to read. I am in the process of proofing and editing a *test* to be a beta
reader. While writing isn't my strongest point from the imagination aspect,
proofing and editing is. I keep coming across minor spelling and grammar
errors that bug the heck out of me. While they are minor to an amateur
writer, they would put JKR in the doghouse for a long time if her editors
didn't catch them.
And I have *applied* for access to the adult section as well, although I
don't consider their process for that to be very sensible in regards to
keeping out the younger set.

I think it is so cool that you're doing the beta reader thing! All the
authors on the fanfic sites that I've seen absolutely fawn and drool
over their betas! Good luck to you! I hope you get it!
On some of the "adult" fanfic sites, you have to apply for a password
in order to view the fics and there's one where you have to fill out a
form.
Surprisingly, there are a few really good fics out there, where the
characters are "in canon" so to speak and the writing is done very
well.
LOL...I do know what you mean about the grammar and spelling errors,
though!

You're aware that that is a dangerous thing to admit here in public?
You might get owled to death by all the desperate fanfic writers
who suffer from the inability to catch their own mistakes (count me
in on that!). ;)

No, it was _described_ and _acted out_ in class. It wasn't demonstrated,
because there wasn't a werewolf present to do it on. Lockhart just _says_
he did the "immensely difficult" Homorphus charm.
I'm sure that if Dumbledore had been able to do it, he would have. It
would have been invaluable in preventing the werewolves from joining with
Voldemort, and Dumbledore would have spared no effort to cure as many
werewolves as possible.
The fact that Dumbledore couldn't do it, even though it was described in
one of Lockhart's books, implies that the instructions weren't given,
just the story and the claim.

He did describe the wizard who had invented it, which I think implies
that the spell did exist once.

Good point. Snape says (Sectumsempra, ch24HBP) that if you take dittany
immediately it can prevent scarring. Time limits may apply to other magical
cures.

Dittany shows up earlier. Harry looks up Dittany in the book on
magical herbs and fungi, in PS/SS (IIRC). I'm told that the
legend about how people learned that dittany was a healing herb
(also called "healall") was:
Someone killed a snake. The snake's mate raced off, returned
with a leaf, laid it over the other snake, and the dead snake
revived. The man chased them away and picked up the leaf,
which was dittany.
Draco and Snape of course are both Slytherins, whose symbol is
a snake.
