First we had Dumbledore isn't dead and this was followed up by every
character, piece of furniture and blade of grass being cast as a horcrux
and now we have "JKR said that 2 major characters will die in book 7".

How the hell did you people ever get to the end of book 6 or did you
just get someone to read them all to you?

I just despair at a group of such stupid people spreading their
stupidity onwards and upwards to others who didn't see the original
article.

If that's OK with you of course.... :-p

No, actually I understand Pooter's reaction completely. People seem to
pick up on a few very limited keywords and run with them, even though
they are not what JKR said. She never said "two major characters will
die in Book 7." She said that two characters that she had planned on
letting live would die instead, and that one that had been scheduled
for death got a reprieve. Not even close to the same thing. 1) she
never said "major characters". 2) She never said that only those two
characters were going to die. But this is how people seem to be
treating it. "Which two will die?" Imagine their surprise when the
book comes out and five major characters die. Or two major characters
and twelve minor characters. Or no major characters but thousands of
minor ones. Picking up on "2 characters will die" is horribly
misleading (and it's also exactly what our local TV newscast picked up
on last night) and it's also almost certainly wrong.

Article? It was an interview on telly... whether or not it was live,
unfortunately I don't know. Live interviews are tricky, because you just
so might slip out bit too much :)

And what, exactly, makes you think Dumbledore isn't dead? If the killing
curse didn't off him, the fall from the highest tower certainly did.

JKR doesn't seem to me to be the "slip out a bit to much type" and I am

I totally understand what you are saying. All I am saying is that there
are better ways of getting a point across without calling people who want
to discuss a book "stupid." I am sure that we all have misinterpretted
things in the past - yes, even you pooter. This doesn't make anyone
stupid. If someone is misinformed, then enlighten us with wisdom. Don't
just call people names and get angry. i get upset with my children when
they call people names.

I understand completely what you're saying. I think some of the problem
could be that readers are in "no-man's land" right now and are latching
onto Jo's comments with a vengence and in some instances,
misunderstandings, in order to satisfy their insatiable thirst for
information about book seven.

Piece of advice: Don't get too worked up about it! We still have over a
year to go before the book is released. This is only the beginning of
the p.r. machine at work!

Okey-dokey. This is why Pooter and I have been going off the deep end
all day. He didn't say Dumbledore wasn't dead. He said that people
here keep posting that Dumbledore isn't dead, that they keep posting
that everyone and everything is a horcrux, and now they keep posting
that exactly two major characters will die in Book 7. If you read the
entire first paragraph, it should give you the context that he was
pointing out incorrect postings, not that he was trying to say
Dumbledore is not dead.

I have a headache.

Because OOTP, as of now, has a release date of July 13, 2007. There is
no way in hell the "Harry Potter Machine" will allow the fifth movie to
be released AFTER the final book is released. That is the cardinal
rule in Public Relations, Marketing, and Advertising!

What the hell difference will it make to marketing, if the book comes out
say Christmas/Easter, then the film for the summer holidays? She will still
rake in the same amount of money!!

*Finishing touches*...? Where have you seen that she is to that point
already? And even so, there is proofing and editing and all number of things
that mean there is no way that book will be out before at least next summer.
There has always been a release date announced MONTHS ahead of time. 3 or 4
months is just *not* gonna happen.

That would be putting the proverbial "cart before the horse", and no,
the Harry Potter franchise would not "rake in the same amount of money"
because the release of the fifth movie will (from a dollar perspective)
serve to increase and enhance the profit margin for the seventh book
(looking at it from a "franchise" perspective, not an individual medium
perspective). It would not happen the other way around. If there were a
more significant span of time between the two mediums, then I would
agree. However, since it has already been announced that the OOTP movie
is supposed to be released 7/13/07 and that the final book of the
series, according to Scholastic/Bloomsbury, is supposed to be released
in 2007, the franchise as a whole would take a monetary hit if the
seventh and final book were released before the fifth movie of the
series.

I also haven't read anywhere that she is "putting finishing touches to
the book". IIRC, the book is still in the process of being written.

I found that comment, "finishing touches".. not from JKR herself, but from
whomever wrote the article about the interview; so no, it was NOT something
JKR said. There is a journalist somewhere who apparently has no concept of
what *finishing touches* are when it comes to writing a book.

You and Pooter seem to be misinturrpeting peoples reactions. Nobody
seems convicned only 2 peopel will die. All we know is two people
willd efinitely die, so we're focusing onw hich two JK finalyl decided
to off. That doesn't mean more cna't die. In fact, we know there ahs
to be a thrid death, juts from her cmmnets. of course, her reprieval
doe smean that thrid person cna also be reprieved. So, we have 3
epopel dying, 2 of which are confirmed. Therefore, we speculate on
who those two will be? Pointless to ponder an unknown number. Do we
really wnat a blank will die avalanche liek blank is a horcrux?
especially sicne 99% of horcurx theories aren't based in book reality.

As for amjor, that always happens. Any mention of death ebcoems a
major one. why? well, whymention sudden;y killing off two charatcers
barely mentioned int her series? Will anybodyt ruly car eif Susan
Bone sis killed?

Actually, based on this interview, nobody will eb surprised that more
than two died, because nobody thinks only two will eb dying in total.
Thoguh the final number cna still eb surprising, even to you and
Pooter.

No, it's right. 2 charatcers will die. Doens't perclude more than
two, unless they say only, inall, in total, just the 2, etc.

You're reading too much into what's being said, and not what's being
meant. and what's menat is whcih two annoucned characters that we
know of will die? we certainly cna't speculate on an unknown number.

Yup. Apart from the mistaken belief we're all convicned only 2 peopel
will be dying, thta's exactly what Pooter's on about. Poeple making
up stuff about Dd living, anythign a horcrux no matter how impossible.

Couldn't have been clearer.

it takes like 6 months at least from time of I'm done to having a
sellable book. At least. Throw in another 3-4 months writing if
we're lucky (and we ain't), and that's 9 months. Figure 9 months won't
be in a money making season, and it'll be delayed further. A year is
a very good estimate.

Your writing, on the other hand, could be clearer, if you slowed down

LOL! Not worked up as it isn't *that* important, just astonished.

This then moved to despair at the speed at which the incorrect stuff was
being spread.

It finally changed to double astonishment at how somes peeps reacted
when they realised they had got it wrong.
