Virus spreads among Yahoo Mail users
Fox News
"Yahoo Inc. (YHOO), the world's largest provider of e-mail services,
said on Monday that a software virus aimed at Yahoo Mail users had
infected 'a very small fraction' of its base of more than 200 million
accounts. The e-mail virus, or worm, has been dubbed Yamanner and
landed in Yahoo mailboxes bearing the headline 'New Graphic Site.'
Once opened, the message infects the computer and spreads to other
users listed in Yahoo users' e-mail address books, security experts
said. The e-mail containing the virus need only be opened — in
contrast to most worms that are hidden in attachments and require
users to take an additional step — to release the virus, according to
computer security site Symantec Corp. (SYMC)." (06/13/06)

I think I've had that one from a yahoo group. Yay for paranoid email=20

address.

This is also why I never use a preview window in Netscape.

I am having some trouble seeing what the worm actually does, from
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/js.y amanner [at] m.html
I don't think it "infects the computer" in a meaningful sense, although
I could be wrong. Apparently it executes JavaScript inside your Yahoo!
Mail session, which is a web browsing session, and collects e-mail
addresses in your Yahoo! Mail personal folders for other Yahoo.com
users or YahooGroups.com mailing lists, and sends itself to them, and
sends copies of the addresses to a specific domain, and then it points
your Web browser to that domain to open its home page. All of this
happens inside the browser and does not affect your PC permanently;
close down Internet Explorer and it all goes away - I think.
Now what happens when your Web browser opens that Web site - that's
another question.
The anti-virus program evidently thinks it can prevent the JavaScript
from running in the first place.
I'm interested that it's classified by Symantec as affecting only
Windows PCs. If it's browser and JavaScript-based then it should
affect everyone, unless it's a specific Microsoft weakness, in which
case only Internet Explorer should be affected, and Opera or
Mozilla-family browsers would be OK. It's actually stated to be a
vulnerability in Yahoo! Mail itself, which has been fixed in their
newer, beta, JavaScript-based interface.
As far as I know, Yahoo! Mail doesn't open messages automatically - you
have to click on them in a list - so it still isn't that easy. But the
"Don't Open Strange Messages" rule is one that I learned long ago with
Microsoft desktop e-mail tools.
