Goofballs? Assuming a Hobbit at 33 is equivalent to a Human at 21, we
get:
- Pippin is 28 is in his irresponsible tweens,
roughly equivalent to a human of 17 or 18.
- Merry is 36, roughly equivalent to a human of 22 or 23.
- Sam is 38, -oughly equivalent to a human of 24 or 25.
- Frodo is 50, roughly equivalent to a human of 31 or 32.
So Pippin acts like a teenager through much of the books and Merry more
maturely, but still like a college student. Is this a surprise? But
when they return to the Shire they are not acting like goofballs
anymore. Growing up?
No real prospects? Pippin is heir to the Thain of the Shire. Merry is
heir to the Master of Buckland, head of the Brandybuck family.
Now in regards to the ladies:
- "Who's this young giant with the loud voice?" he whispered.
"Not little Pippin! What's your size ..."
- [Fredegar Bolger, LotR, Bk.6, Ch.9, The Grey Havens]
It seems to me that Diamond of Long Cleeve is about to marry the MOST
eligible bachelor in the Shire. And Pippin has grown in many ways, in
maturity and physically. I think that Miss Diamond of Long Cleavage
will be most satisfied with this "young giant" Peregrin Took.
And formerly-Fatty Bolger's sister, Estella isn't doing too bad with
the future Master of Buckland.
All seriousness aside, Merry and Pippin grow up a lot in their travels.
Pippin certainly isn't the buffoon he was only a few months before.
Back in the Shire, things seem simpler than in the wider world of
Middle-earth. When the time comes for action, they now have the
confidence to do what needs to be done and not look to others to make
decisions for them. The Shire is their home and their responsibility,
foreshadowing their future roles as Thain and Master of Buckland (I had
to work that in).

Just niggling, but don't you mean FotR, not LotR?

New meaning to the term "woody".
