I would not disagree with this list. However, what about the top 5 among
one-time guest stars (i.e., they've only appeared once.)
Let's maybe allow Danny DeVito - I think he's appeared twice, but he's not
really a recurring guest star like Kelsey Grammer.*
I will be thinking about my list and post it later.

I don't count Hartman or Lovitz as guest stars, because they voiced
several recurring characters.
What was Brooks besides Hank Scorpio and Jacques the Bowling
Instructor?
(This is assumed that we're ranking them by the quality of the
character they voiced, by the way)
my list:
1) Kelsey Grammar (Sideshow Bob)
2) Jack Sheldon (The Amedment To Be)
3) Patrick Stewart (Number One, leader of the Stonecutters)
4) Dustin Hoffman (Mr. Bergstrom)
5) Johnny Cash (The Coyote), even though the episode sucked
honorable mentions: Rodney Dangerfield as Mr. Burns' son, Meryl Streep
as Lovejoy's daughter, and the cast of Cheers (in the bar Homer
stumbles into)

> I will be thinking about my list and post it later.
And I have done so, but wanted to list 10. (For the anal-retentive among
you, kindly read only the last 5.)
10. James Woods - for his self-effacing role in "Homer and Apu" [1F10]
9. Stephen Jay Gould - in "Lisa the Skeptic" [5F05], for some reason, I
really like when he says "
I'm going to be honest with you Lisa... I never did the tests." Extra credit
because he was running to get to the bathroom.
8. Michelle Pfeiffer - playing the sexy but ditzy Mindy Simmons "The Last
Temptation of Homer" [1F07].
7. Kirk Douglas - who knew it was Spartacus (aka Chester Lampwick) in "The
Day the Violence Died" [3F16]?
6. Dennis Weaver - he seemed to be one of the older actor that "gets" the
show in "The Lastest Gun in the West" [DABF07].
5. John Waters - a "fabulous" performance in "Homer Phobia" [4F11].
4. Lawrence Tierney - he actually intimidated the crew in the production of
"Marge Be Not Proud" [3F07].
3. Kathleen Turner - she became part of the Simpsons mythology in "Lisa vs.
Malibu Stacy" [1F12] playing the creator of Lisa's favorite doll.
2. Rodney Dangerfield - he made the role of Monty Burns' son great by
playing his schtick in "Burns, Baby Burns" [4F05]. Great line: "Well, how do
ya like that? I _have_ been in a museum."
and finally...
1. Harvey Fierstein - as Karl in "Simpson and Delilah," he was such a big
part of the show. And the show was excellent in any case.

When was Walken on the show? If you're thinking of the time he read
"Goodnight Moon" (in "Insane Clown Poppy"), that was Jay Mohr doing a
Walken impersonation
My fake-out five:
5. Jim Cummings (the horse, "Saddlesore Galactica")
4. Jack Sheldon (the singer of "I'm an Amendment to Be", "The Day the
Violence Died")
3. Marsha Waterbury (one of the live-action people Homer passes on his
way to Erotic Cakes, "Treehouse of Horror VI")
2. Denice/Denise Kumagi (one of the "awesuma powua" women in the
Mister Sparkle ad, "In Marge We Trust")
1. Liz Georges (Maggie from the Tracey Ullman short, "138th Episode
Spectacular")

No, no that wasn't it. It was "Roy!"
Here is a rundown of its all too brief existence:
---------------------
"Roy!"
Premise: The lovable Gen-X slacker Roy, a supporting player from "The
Simpsons", gets out of Homer's garage, and into his own apartment. Located
across town
in Springfield, the small apartment complex has a new owner under Reverend
Timothy Lovejoy, who inherits it from a late parishoner. ("Think of it,
Helen -
this may be my ticket out of my dead-end job!") There's just one catch -
Roy's two roommates are girls, something that doesn't sit will with the Rev!
Season 1
"Roy Meets Girls"
-- In the series pilot, Roy moves into an apartment with two sexy
ladies, Roxanne and Suzy. He also meets his landlord for the first time -
Reverend Timothy Lovejoy of Springfield. At first, Lovejoy is not thrilled
about the living arrangement, and threatens to evict Roy. However, the
roommates concoct a cover story that they are actually second cousins.
"The Landlords of Flat Bush"
-- While trying to sneak a girl into his room, Roy accidentally destroys
the Lovejoys' prize roses.
"Mild, Mild Life"
-- Roy books what he thinks is a swinging-singles cruise, but is
actually a pastors' retreat. (First mention of Roy's last name, Hollander;
before now, it was a mystery.)
"The Girl, the Sold Watch, and Anything"
-- A bittersweet story that has Roy pawning a watch that was a gift from
an old girlfriend. But now the girlfriend wants it back.
"Rambling Toes"
-- Suzy starts sleepwalking, ending up in some unusual situations.
Meanwhile, Roxanne and Mrs. Lovejoy compete to see who's the thriftiest
grocery shopper.
"Three Before Midnight"
-- The roommates swap ghostly tales (Halloween episode).
"Mid-thigh Express"
-- Roxanne contemplates getting a tattoo in a discrete place.
"Dream of Mushroom Soup"
-- Roy's efforts at cooking the household's dinners have mixed results.
"Roy G. Biv"
-- Roy takes up painting at the community college, but is immediately
drawn to the sculpting teacher in another class.
"Someone to Wash Over Me"
-- A new upstairs neighbor irritates the three roommates with his
apparent shower antics.
"Cool Hand Fluke"
-- Suzy keeps accidentally shop-lifting small items - and getting away
with it.
"Poor Roy's Complaint"
-- Roy confides to his therapist that he sometimes has physical
attraction for his roommates, providing the series' biggest "Well, DUH!"
moment.
"I Have No Mouth and Ice Cream"
-- The trio win a month's supply of ice cream, just as Roy is put on a
no-dairy diet prior to a blood test.
"Drying Miss Maggie"
-- Maggie Simpson makes a guest appearance as our heroes are drafted
into babysitting for a weekend.
"The Svelte Days of Christmas"
-- Roxanne, upset by the weight gain brought on by pre-Christmas cookie
binging, goes on a diet. (Christmas episode)
"Suzy Queue"
-- Suzy gets upset waiting in lines at various places, and comes up with
innovative ways to get around them. Meanwhile Roy enters an arm-wrestling
competetion with Rev. Lovejoy as his coach.
"Roy's Dot-Com Bustle"
-- Roy tries his hand at selling exotic Asian toads on the internet, but
soon finds his supply is outstripping the demand.
"Scotch on the Roxanne"
-- Roxanne takes a new job serving drinks in the local pub, while Roy
and Suzy try to buy a used car.
"The Mean, Mean Grass of Home"
-- Rev. Lovejoy announces a new policy - you are responsible for any
lawn in front of your apartment, and our three tenants have the lion's
share.
"Backed Into School"
-- Roy finds himself owing on a student loan that he didn't know he had.
However, he defers payments by re-enrolling in Springfield University.
"Spoken Ain't Aloud in School"
-- For a class project in his Cultural Communications class, Roy
forbears verbal communication for a week. (Season finale)
Season 2
"I'm Ready for my Close-crop, Barber Seville"
-- Roxanne gets a disastrous haircut from Roy's barber friend, but is
too polite to complain about it.
"Who's Eating Philbert's Grapes?"
-- It's roommate against roommate as food mysteriously disappears from
the community fridge.
"The Money Pit and the Pendulum"
-- Season 2's Halloween episode features house and home related tales of
terror. Reverend Lovejoy tells of "There Grows the Neighborhood." Roy's
story is called "House Hungers."
"All You Need Is Snubbed"
-- Suzy and Roxanne are turned down when applying to an exclusive
exercise club. Meanwhile, Roy gets a job as the club's pool cleaner.
"A Brief History of Thyme"
-- Reverend Lovejoy insists on cooking Sunday dinners for the gang.
Unfortunately he's not as good as he thinks. (A low point in the series,
this plot is basically recycled from 'Dream of Mushroom Soup.')
"Roy vs. the Chocolate Factory"
-- Roy enjoys only 30 minutes at his new job at a candy concern before
the union goes on strike.
"The Simpson Files"
-- Homer and Bart guest star as Roy shops for a tuxedo for his older
brother's wedding. (Another poor episode, with Homer and Bart brought in to
draw viewers.)
"A Very Special 'Roy'"
-- When Roy makes up a disease in order to get a free pizza, he finds
himself creating more and more elaborate lies to cover his misdeed. The
episode pokes fun at "very special" shows that seem to plague sit-coms.
"It Ain't Offal 'til the Phat Lady Sings"
-- Roxanne wins a karaoke contest based on looks alone, but she doesn't
know that. (Titled ironically, this was the last show broadcast.)

If you made all this up yourself, congratulations, that was hilarious

Phil Hartman has Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, as well as several guest
characters (Lyle Lanley, Evan Conover, Ben Hur). He's a "guest star"
like Harry Shearer was a guest star...more like an extended member of
the cast.
