Madonna was a bad choice (my taste, my opinion), but this Goldfrapp
might "top" it...
Hopefully it's only a rumour.

Most likely some clever clod stumbled upon one of the James Bond forums
and/or this newsgroup and saw references to Goldfrapp (they've been
mentioned a few times over the past 6-8 months) and has run with it. So
far, the Goldfrapp story is no more credible than any other.
By the way, Tina Turner was just linked (again) to the CR title song...

--- If both appear to be linked to a tune, then maybe EON might be
thinking of going the same route as with TND - having one do the
lead-in version and the other do the ending version. One can only hope
that EON gets it right this time because Sheryl Crowe's TND was an
unintelligble mess while K.D. Lang's much better version got kind of
lost by being at the end of the film.

FWIW, 'Surrender' was, if not David Arnold's baby, his godchild (note
the number of references made to it in his score for the film) and he
also went public with his objections to Madonna's theme for DAD. For
those who don't like his work, it may be worth noting that he may have
been subject to constrictions which John Barry never had to consider.
When it comes to an art form as collaborative as film, one sometimes
has to be careful where one apportions blame.
Anyway, regarding Goldfrapp's best-known or most-circulated song being
'Ooh La La', consider the following list of artists and some of their
most famous or best-selling tracks...
Tom Jones: 'It's Not Unusual', 'Delilah', 'Sex Bomb'
Lulu: 'Shout', 'Boom Bang-a-Bang'
Paul McCartney (solo): 'Mull of Kintyre', 'Silly Love Songs', 'Ebony
and Ivory'
Sheena Easton: '9 to 5 (Morning Train)'
....and to look at this from another angle, hardly anybody who's
recorded a Bond theme has ever recorded another track which could have
served the same purpose.
As they say in ads for financial services, past performance is no
guarantee of future success. The question for is not whether Goldfrapp
have so far recorded a Bond theme, it's whether they have the potential
to do so.
To me this relates to the whole of the CR / Craig project, and the
future of the Bond films in general: you *have* to try to see potential
in people and to take a risk on new talent, even if all you're asking
is that they provide a new angle on tried and tested themes and
formulas. Any other approach ensures artistic death in the short run,
and comercial death in the long run. 'Playing safe', whether that's
attempting to repeat the triumphs of 1964 or 2002, is not in fact
'safe' at all.
Best

Guess it was good PR for Goldfrapp while it lasted (will be a couple
more weeks based on lazy journalists)

---Very impressive when Reed said with easy candor..."Mrmmf

listened.

Watched the whole thing. Couldn't turn it off. Frightening.
"That's enough from you, big tits."
Wow.
Surely projects such as "The Sting II" (with Mac Davis!) contributed to Mr.
Reed's downward spiral.
Interesting bit here from IMDB. Anyone know if it is accurate? Methinks
the series would have died a drunken death with Reed in the role.
"Oliver Reed narrowly missed out on playing superspy James Bond because of
his love of alcohol and fighting. A new biography of the star uncovered a
letter from Bond mastermind Albert R. Broccoli outlining how close he came
to replacing Sean Connery in the role. Broccoli wrote, "With Reed we would
have had a far greater problem to destroy his image and re-mold him as James
Bond. We just didn't have the time or money to do that." According to Cliff
Goodwin, author of the book "Evil Spirits", "Oliver was probably within a
sliver of being cast as Bond." He adds, "But by 1968 his affairs were public
and he was already drinking and fighting - as far away from the refined Bond
image as you could get."
Tom Zielinski
"That gun, it looks more fitting for a woman."
"Do you know much about guns, Mr. Bond?"
"No, but I know of a sot when I see/hear/smell one..."

In light of the fact Reed turned down Robert Shaw's role in the original,
(plus Shaw's role in JAWS) when it was offered to him. Reed refused to
court Hollywood in the way his contemporaries Caine and Connery
did, but was enjoying a resurgence in his career when he died.
Reed's career had already reached crisis point in the early '60s. He
had been glassed in a nightclub, giving him the distinctive scars on
his face; as a consequence he was losing work. It was actually Ken
Russell who brought Reed back to prominence, casting him in his
incredible TV drama-documentaries (and many of his subsequent films).
I think Reed could have played Bond (he would have made a great
Brad Whittaker), but had just too much baggage.
He was a drunk, but was also a fine actor.

Heh. And people say that 'Big Brother' is gladiatorial and
voyeuristic.
This is a terrific find, Mac. Many thanks. I haven't seen this since
it first aired, but it's amazing how close this is to my memory of it,
which shows what an impression it left on me.
Tom and other non-UK readers: 'After Dark' was a live Saturday night
discussion programme on Channel 4 in the early days of 24-hour TV, and
its hook was that it was open-ended: since there were no programmes
scheduled to follow it until 6 or 7AM the debate could be as long or
short as the participants wanted. Much of the time it was worthy and
earnest, and whoever asked Oliver Reed to join the sober, learned folks
who made up the rest of the panel for this particular episode was
clearly just out to cause mischief...

('Private Eye' printed a behind-the-scenes story about this particular
episode. When the show was originally broadcast, transmission was
interrupted about halfway through and Channel 4 started showing a very
dull documentary about (IIRC) rural affairs. The reason this happened
was that an insomniac prankster had called the Channel 4 switchboard
and announced 'I'm Lord William Rees-Mogg' - at the time the head of
the Broadcasting Standards Commission - 'and I'm very angry'. The few
people left at Channel 4 HQ panicked and pulled the show, only to be
called a few minutes later by a very angry head of programming who tore
strips off them for falling for such an obvious hoax, and ordered them
to put 'After Dark' back on the air.)

Sadly Russell himself has recently been reduced to shooting no-budget
films starring his wife in his own back garden...
