I like the look of the casino and hotel, and the Bentley is a nice
touch. There's a retro, faded-glamour feel to all this, which, coupled
with the pictures of Craig and Green in noir-ish gear, captures the
slight nostalgia which occurs in a lot of Fleming's work.
As regards the cars, I have a strong suspicion that we're talking
chapters 15-16 here, and that the two Astons seen in the picture will
be a single Aston on screen.
>From the production diaries at www.mi6.co.uk it looks like we're
getting close to the wrap, and since it's already been mentioned that
the torture scene will be one of the last filmed, it seems to me that
we may have got many of the key chapters and events of Fleming's CR on
film - more than have been adapted from a Fleming original for many
years, and certainly more than made it into any of EON's movies during
the 1970s. Whether they'll work in the context of the additional
material in the script or whether they'll work in a film set in the
modern world remains to be seen. At the moment I'm optimistic.
As for Craig, well, there isn't anything left to do except wait and
see. Among regulars here and elsewhere, there's been some frankly
hysterical reaction in some quarters, cynicism in others, and broad
acceptance from others still, but only the lunatic fringe of so-called
'Bond fans' really believe that they can influence what happens next:
it's how the casual movie audience react which will make a lot of the
difference, and not many people who post to Bond forums online really
speak for them. I want the guy to get at least Dalton's two shots at
the role, but if the absolute worst happens and he only gets Lazenby's
one, then I hope he has George's satisfaction of having made one of the
better Bond movies. (Sometimes I wish there were statutory limits, as
with terms of office - no Bond to make fewer than two or more than four
movies - but that's beside the point.)
(Message to c***gn*tb**d and their adeherents on various forums: the
arguments are out there, and anybody who's already made up their minds
that Daniel Craig will be no good is welcome to his or her opinion and
can simply not bother going to see CR. If you think he's an outright
bad choice, just stay away and be done with it, but don't pester those
of us who are sceptical, curious, or positive about the guy because it
won't stop us watching the film. If you hate him that much, just
withdraw your custom. Rant over.)
Incidentally, where did Eva Green pick up that very fine middle-class
English accent she's been using even in interviews?
Best
Phil
