Interesting, if false and misleading, advertising. [message #283718] So, 11 Juni 2006 05:03

I was watching some rot on TV last night and saw an add for the DVD release
of the TV series "Wild Wild West". They advertised it as "Before there was
James Bond, there was Jim West" or something to that effect. Odd how WWW
came out in 1965 and EON had already made two movies by then, not to mention
the fact that Fleming had been writing the character for more than a decade
and Bond had even appeared on TV in the previous decade.

Isn't there some law about making false statements in advertising? I sure
hope EON sees this and sues them into oblivion... The unmitigated gall.
Trying to make people think THEIR product was the original.

I think what they mean is that James West was doing spy-type work in
the 1860's (approximately) whereas James Bond was doing it in the
1960's.... so this means that, yes, James West was doing this type of
thing about 100 years *before* James Bond was.

Also it's such hyperbole that it really has no meaning. I understand the
point, but it's really a compliment to the Bond brand name. Further, I
can't conceive of anyone being effected by such an ad to say "Screw James
Bond, he came out after WWW, what an asshole."

Hold up there, nice gemmen! That there "Man of Bronze" was around
before James West and James Bond. Doc Savage began in 1933 and
the film is an adaptation, of sorts, of the first novel.

Not a great adaptation, mind...

Latest actor linked with a possible big screen return for the Doc
is Dwayne Johnson.

Granted, though I was referring to and should have specifically noted the
1975 Ron Ely film complete with tag-line "Bigger than Bond!", or some such
copy.

OK, so I should have somehow reflected with a grin. Of course, I hadn't
thought of "Before there was James Bond" being a reference to Jim West being
a 19th Century gunslinger for the US Secret Service while 007 is a modern
(20th and now 21st Century) gunslinger for Her Majesty's Secret Service.
