TONY HICKS: AND ANOTHER THING

Young Zappa pays tribute to dad in S.F.

Anyways, if Radiohead at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on Friday and
Saturday isn't enough to exhaust your musical sensibilities -- and it
should be -- then you can finish off the musical brain hemorrhage at
the Warfield on Saturday night.
That's where Dweezil Zappa will pay tribute to his legendary father,
Frank Zappa, with "Zappa Plays Zappa."
Later generations remember Zappa for fathering 1980s MTV VJs (Dweezil
and Moon Unit), his 1982 semi-hit "Valley Girl," and his appearances
in Washington before congressional panels arguing against censoring
the recording industry. My first brush with Zappa was listening to
"Joe's Garage" at 12 years old, courtesy of my friend's older brother,
and laughing along while really not understanding what was so funny
about "Catholic Girls."
But what Dweezil is trying to show the masses is a celebration of the
genius of Zappa's unorthodox music and amazing guitar playing. An
accomplished guitarist in his own right who grew up heavily influenced
by people such as Edward Van Halen, Dweezil took two years to study
his father's intricate, expressive guitar playing, which ranged from
rock to jazz to progressive to classical to jazz-prog to ...
You get the point. Frank Zappa, while a brilliant satirist, was also a
devoted musician and composer.
Dweezil Zappa has brought back some of the virtuosos of Zappa's old
band for the tour, including guitarist Steve Vai, drummer Terry
Bozzio, and saxophonist and flutist Napoleon Murphy Brock, who will
also handle much of the vocals.
And you can also expect lots of appearances from the man himself --
Frank Zappa, who has appeared at other tour spots as his son's opening
act, so to speak, with live footage of Zappa and his Mothers of
Invention from the '70s. If form holds, he'll also appear via video
during the show.
Details: "Zappa Plays Zappa" starts at 8 p.m. at the Warfield, 982
Market St., S.F. Tickets are $39.50-$48.50. Call 925-685-8497 or go to
