Sacrilege and The Dangerous Jazz Discharge Kitchen Party Hats [message #283356] Fr, 16 Juni 2006 23:02

My ipod recently served up The Dangerous Kitchen and, as I listened to
it more closely than I have for a long while, I had the sacrilegious
notion that it might be interesting to hear the track without Frank's
vocals for once; to just listen to the backing band with Vai's overdub
alone or, if that's not possible, just the Vai guitar part. The Jazz
Discharge Party Hats would be another obvious candidate for said
treatment.

Anybody know if such a mutation exists out there?

Presumably such a mix could be made from a multitrack tape in the vault.
But no, it's not in circulation.

What I'd like to hear is the complete Greggery Peccary (either EM or
Abnuceals) without vocals. How about a DVD in which the vocals can be
turned on or off?

One of my biggest (only?) disappointments with the EM Greggary Peccary
was the inclusion of vocals. I was really hoping for a mute version.

Using your powers of concentration and mental discipline you can tune it
out.

....although the original concert performances (except for the last
verse of Dangerous Kitchen) without Vai's overdubs are in circulation.

But that's the opposite of what the original poster requested.

How about if he reversed the phase on the raw concert recording and
mixed it with the album version? Could he end up with mostly just Vai's
overdub?

Yeah, that EM bloke's 'wacky' vocals are a real turn off.
What is it with folks covering Zappa and the 'comedy vocal stylings',
Saw John Etheridge's Zappatistas a while back and the silly voices were so
forced.
Totally marred the songs on which they were employed.

Actually, I'm a fan of "that EM bloke" - David Moss' "Dense Band" and
"Full House" are a couple of my favorite albums.

But, yeah: he's no FZ when it comes to narrating 'Greggery Peccary'. Of
course, I can't really hear Frank pulling off 'Full House', either.

The point, in the case of Greggery Peccary, is that I'd like one
version where I can concentrate on the music. "Shut Up'n Wave Your
Baton" would be a good title for the album I'm imagining.

The reverse is true for my interest in the mute versions of 'The Jazz
Discharge Party Hats' and 'The Dangerous Kitchen' - I'd really be
interested to hear how well Steve Vai's guitar evokes FZ's voice. The
story of him hunched over an oscilloscope vigorously emulating wave
forms with his guitar has always intrigued me and I'll bet a version
without the vocals would be terrifically eerie and amazing to hear.

Or maybe it would suck petunias. What the fuck do I know?

Nah, they'd drift out of sync, unfortunately. Reversing phase isn't
quite that versatile!!
