Ray White's best vocal performance [message #283149] So, 11 Juni 2006 21:01

God, I can see why Zappa got Ray White whenever he could: He could sing
his ass off day in day out.

His singing on "You Are What You Is" and "The Illinois Enema Bandit"
are where he really shines I reckon.

Oh yes.
But be aware of the fact that Ike Willis is very present on YAWYI
as well. I recall having read somewhere that at a certain point Ray
White couldn't reconcile his religious conviction with Zappa's lyrics
anymore, which is how Ike Willis finally got to replace him.

FZ let Ray go from the group in '77 for that reason, but rehired him in
'80 because it seemed like he would fit in with that lineup.

I think the previous poster was referring to the *song* You Are What You
Is, which does indeed feature Ray's lead vocal.

Ike never replaced Ray. Ray had been gone for a year when Ike joined in
1978. They sang together in 1980. Ray but not Ike was in the band in
1981/1982. They sang together again in 1984.

Ike and Ray were going to sing together yet again in 1988, but Ray
disappeared. That's how *Mike Keneally* got to succeed him. (I'm sure
Mike would agree with Jefferson's remark about Franklin.)

As I recall the story, Thomas Jefferson was the US ambassador to France
after Benjamin Franklin. When someone asked if he had come to Paris to
replace Franklin, Jefferson replied, "I come to succeed him. No man
could replace him."

And it appears that I actually remembered the story correctly.

From a letter Jefferson wrote to an unknown recipient on February 19,
1917:

Some of my faves include "Doreen" and the super long note that he sings
in "City of TIny Lites" on one of the "Stage" CDs. I figure he must be
doing some special breathing technique to whip that one out.

Can we give it up for "Doreen", peoples? One of Ray's very best "singing
his ass off" performances, without question.

FZ mentioned this as one reason Ray left the band after the late 76 /
early 77 tour, and it's pretty funny considering that when Ray rejoined
the band in 1980, he was singing on stuff like "The Meek Shall Inherit
Nothing". Also, I wouldn't really say that Ike was a replacement for Ray
in any direct sense, as Ray left the band in early '77 and Ike was given
a spot in the band in mid-late '78 (with the "Baby Snakes"/"Sheik
Yerbouti" band existing in the interim).

That's always a treat. And I always get a kick out him scat singing
while playing a guitar solo (he would do this on "City of Tiny Lights"
in 1976 [see "Conceptual Continuity" from BTB II] and sometimes in
"Pound For A Brown" in 1982 [see YCDTOSA Vol.5]).

FZ's quote on this is a bit vague, but he may have been talking about
the personalities of the other band members more than the lyrics.

The Evil Prince from Vol 4 still sends shivers up my spine. IMHO, the
song on Thingfish ain't up to much, but that performance is simply
incredible.

The best vocal performance I've ever heard is Bianca Odin on Black
Napkins in mid-76, followed by Bianca on You Didn't try to Call Me in
(yup) mid-76. Almost unnatural in range and depth of tone. Oddly
enough, her pairing with Ray wasn't as mind-blowing as you would
expect, but she was freak of the week.

But Wind Up Working In A Gas Station (YCDTOSA 6) was recorded earlier,

Sorry. Ray White (right) sings lead on most of The Evil Prince (YCDTOSA
4).

Ike Willis (left) recites the Thing-Fish intro and sings "The spying
potato..." and "I've a special review..."

I think Ike, Robert, and Ray are panned fairly consistently throughout
YCDTOSA.
