International Scandinavian Linguistics Thread Day! [message #282650] Sa, 10 Juni 2006 05:15
morgothscurse2002
Hey, June 8 was International Scandinavian Linguistics Thread Day!
(Also known as Ojevind Lang's birthday.)

In observance of this special day, it is my privilege to launch this
year's Scandinavian Linguistic Thread;

I submit that the Klingon language is based on Scandinavian languages.

I submit the following proof: Scandinavian languages are
incomprehensible. Klingon is incomprehensible. Ergo, Klingon must be
based on a Scandinavian language. QED. ;-)

Happy Birthday, Ojevind!

Thank you, Michael! If your suspicion is correct, then I would surmise that
Klingon is based on neo-Norwegian, since I find it so hard to udnerstand.

There are one or two dialects from north-western Jutland that would fit
the the requirements as well, but otherwise I agree entirely with that
surmise -- neo-Norwegian is, as the only Scand language I've ever seen,
even incomprehensible in print ;-)

Well, I find Nynorsk quite easy to understand, but neither Klingon nor
the sample of Värmlandsk I heard once...

Nah, but after the first decade of marriage to one of them it seems
less incomprehensible -- any anyone knows, anyway, that Synnejysk is
just a German dialect; nothing Klingon there (carefully checking that
the wife isn't looking over my shoulder).

'Synnejysk': the dialect of southern jutland, in particular the Danish
areas of northern Schleswig.

I read something about Heligoland the other day. Is that in the general
area under discussion? Does it have its own dialect?

Som people (including other Danes) also find the dialect of eastern Jutland
rather difficult to understand.

They speak Low German, as do country people in large areas of northwestern
Germany.

Oops! I meant *western * Jutland; I must have been holding the map upside
down.

And Danish as such is not a dialect of German? I bet a student of Old
Norse would say that Scand is to a large degree just that. :-) The softrat
possibly would have, without the "to a large degree" modifier ---

Depending on which part of eastern Jutland we pick the statement is
true nonetheless ;-)

In particular the people from the 'nose' -- the largish peninsula
(Djursland) that juts out south of Limfjorden (the original etymology
is, of course, something entirely different, but as so often happens
the name has changed over time to make some senseless sense in
contemporary language -- in that sense the name literally means 'The
Glue Inlet', though the bathing is excellent there <G>).

Well, if you want to be serious . . .

.. . . then please keep me out of it ;-)

He probably would at that (but then, by now I've got used to
'furriners' on AFT/RABT knowing more about my own language than do I).
