It took a few moments, but I eventually "groked" this one. As per "The
Divine Comedy", these two are being punished in accordance with thier
sin, in each case they are being punished for living off of the vital
efforts of others. That is why the vampire theme.
Virgil's "epics" are a really weak imitation of Homer.
Dante - this one I'm a bit fuzzy on. As I understand (from the History
Channel, not really a reliable source, but I think they have something
this time) there was a different apocoliptic writing (Timothy?) that
was seriously considered as an alternative to the Relevation of John,
the last book of the "New Testament". This other version of the end
times featured tribulations tailored to the sins committed - and this
is a major thread in "The Inferno". The "History Channel" program
fails to mention it, but the possibility that Dante was inspired by
this writing that considered but rejected for inclusion in the "Bible"
is pretty obvious.

Note to believers: I put quote marks around various proper nouns above
because I am a skeptic. As to the existence of "God", as to the
veracity of the "History Channel", and particularly as to whether or
not "JKR" actually wrote all of "Harry Potter and The First Quarter and
Last Quarter of the Book".

Well, the sin of vampirism is the sin of pride in essence. It offers eternal
life in a way that completely excludes God, and since God is the only true way
for salvation, it is thereby completely false. Homer and Dante are accused by
the artist of pride that has lead to a false piety then I guess. Anyway, I think
that is what you were alluding to below - both their writings were based on the
falsely divine.

Actually, I was sort of alluding to the concept of "plagarism".

Interesting. I saw the two observers as Dante and Virgil.
Here's another artist's rendering of "Dante and Virgil in Hell."
