Egads! I was expecting another bad tabloid attempt to bring down Daniel
Craig...but poor Timothy Dalton? The mind boggles.

That was just scary. Not as scary as the look on Rog's face when he
swallowed the golden bullet in TMWTGG, but pretty close.

I never thought I would find something that would make me appreciate Toni
Tennille but hearing Dalton butcher that song might have done it!
I said "might have done it".
Nope, on second thought ... I still don't appreciate her or the Captain ...
but I do respect Timothy Dalton a little less! :-)

Yes, but it was Wild Bill Shatner who sang Lucy in the Sky With
Diamonds. Nimoy is a much better singer (not saying much) and is
probably most famous for The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.

Captain and Tennille rock -- no doubt about it -- the Eurythmics for
their time :-)
I actually rented Sextette. I guess that's the kind of thing you do
when you've got Netflix sending you more movies than you can possibly
watch: deliberately rent a terrible one that you can burn through
superquick!

I think I don't know enough about Dalton's history. Just reading
IMDB.com, I see him appearing in reputable movie after reputable
movie...
The Lion in Winter (1968)
Wuthering Heights (1970)
Mary, Queen of Scots (1971)
Then a bit of a dry spell from 1971 to 1978 (perhaps doing theater?).
He did one single movie between 1971 and 1978: Permission to Kill, aka
The Executioner (1975) (Perhaps not a bad movie. The first IMDB
review begins "One of the best spy movies I've seen...")
Then 1978's "Sextette." And suddenly he was back to doing a movie a
year again!
I don't know how these all-star oddities like "Sextette" and "Casino
Royale" and "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" get launched.
Perhaps they look good on paper?
.... although offhand, I can't think of one movie that might look
similar on paper (zany all-star comedy/musical) that actually turned
out to be good or a hit.

I have a rare CD copy of Wild Bill's first album, The Transformed Man,
which may be the low point in recordings for all time. I love to trot
it out and have people listen to it. It is so awfully bad that it's
beyond description. Actually, the worst cut is Tambourine Man, which
is just hideous.
Die-hard Shatner fans will no doubt want to pick up his new album, Has
Been.
No, I am NOT making this up. I promise.

Yeah, I'd seen this too. I wanted a good copy to save on my hard drive
and it never seems to download right, alas. Good thing I kept the
liquid oxygen cheesburgers and the Jesus Action figure because those
are gone now.

Yeah - he quit films for a few years to concentrate on theatre work,
saying that he didn't feel he had enough experience or expertise yet to
be doing big movies. I always thought that was quite a gutsy thing to
do.

It's one of those European co-productions which has a few good moments
but doesn't really gel. Dalton's character in the movie is quite
interesting: it's a surprisingly non-stereotypical portrayal of a gay
man for the era in which the film was made.
> Then 1978's "Sextette."
Oh yeah. Keith Moon was just about the only person to emerge from that
movie with his dignity intact, and when you can mention Keith Moon and
dignity in the same sentence, you know something's seriously awry.
The thing which makes the clip (and indeed the movie) so difficult to
watch is that you can see that Dalton is utterly embarrassed and wants
to get the hell out of there. It's painful.
Best

I saw a special he did where he did a concert for "Has Been." It was
actually pretty decent, he found a producer/arranger who could work
with the fact that Bill can't sing!
At the end of the concert, in the dark, the arranger says; "You got
time for one more, Bill." and Shatner replies; "I always have time for
one more." The spotlight comes up on him flipping the audience the bird
and he sings "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds." Also not all that bad,
"Mr. Tamborine Man" and "Rocket Man" are pretty atrocious though!

I remember seeing this movie when I was young. We had one of those pre-cable
TV stations here and the movie was laughable then. Tim Dalton courting Mae
West. Nuff' said.

I liked 'Looney Tunes: Back in Action', and it was certainly light
years ahead of the insult to WB heritage that was 'Space Jam'. 'The
Rocketeer' is also fun in parts IMHO. You did, however, omit 'The
Beautician and the Beast' and 'American Outlaws' from your list...
Here's the interesting point, for me. Dalton's British / European
career has for the most part consisted of good roles in prestige
projects, and he's had a lot of critical and artistic success when
working on this side of the Atlantic ('Cromwell', 'Wuthering Heights',
'Jane Eyre', 'Framed', the years at the RSC, etc, etc). IMO, of
Dalton's British projects, the only outright turkey has been, funnily
enough, 'Hawks'. His American work - well, the less said about a lot
of it, the better. It strikes me that Hollywood simply doesn't know
what to do with him, and I suspect that these days a lot of people in
the business in the States regard him first and foremost as the *other*
failed Bond, which can't be helping his career any or putting him in
line for many plum roles.
Fortunately he seems to be rebuilding his profile in the UK, where it
seems people in the industry have more knowledge of his work outside
the narrow confines of Bond, and quite a bit more regard for him as an
actor in his own right. He's been doing some decent projects over here
recently ('His Dark Materials', 'Dunkirk', 'Marple', the upcoming Simon
Pegg movie 'Hot Fuzz'), and I hope this'll continue and that he'll
escape out of the miniseries/straight-to-cable rut he seemed to be
getting into in the States.
Best

I thought LT-BIA had very good bits, but they didn't hold up to a movie
in general. The big-budget remake of CLUTCH CARGO (human lips and all)
would be better than Space Jam!
