J.J. Abram directing the next Startrek movie [message #276565] Sa, 03 Juni 2006 22:13

Hello everyone.

I heard that J.J. Abram (Alias, Lost) will be the next trek movie director.
That would be great. The movie will be about Kirk and Spock early early
years at the academy.

I would LOVE to see Abram behind a new trek series. in a post Voyager
timeline or, why not, in a TOS prequel right after Enterprise.

How does sounds to you?

I enjoyed the films "Forever Young" and "Regarding Henry" and, though
I watch "Lost" to call me a fan might be too strong a statement. I
don't enjoy "Alias" at all.

Most of his work I'm familiar with I like so I'm cautiously
optimistic. Still, I truly enjoyed "Gladiator" and failed to enjoy
"Star Trek: Nemesis" at all. IOW: past success is no guarantee
against future failure.

Salut! I'm suspicious of J.J. Abrams and what he'll do with the new
film. I saw "Mission: Impossible III" and, while I don't want to spoil
anything for anyone who wants to see it but still hasn't, I will say
that I was unimpressed. Many of the individual segments of the movie
I've seen recently in other spy movies, suggesting to me that Abrams
makes a movie by recalling things he saw in other stuff and producing
an amalgamation of those scenes. His villain is imposing, yes, but he
was terribly one-dimentional. The only real reason that he was
anything resembling a worthwhile character is that Philip Seymour
Hoffman is such a good actor that he kept the questions of "Wait; why
is he like this?" at bay for much of the movie. Frankly, there was
nothing new in "M:I III," and I'm afraid there won't be anything new in
"ST XI," either.

It's all about casting and storyline if you ask me. I think we're all a
little bit leery of new old Kirk & Spock stories. Will it contain the
beginnings of dozens of familiar catch phrases? References to what we know
will happen in the future? Spock fighting with his human half? Kirk being a
lustful young loose cannon? Sounds boring and predictable.

If there is a true good story and well directed with a good cast, it will be
a hit. But, from what i remember, NO Star Trek movie where as good for
trekkers as series were. Because movies are for masses while series are for
real trekkers. IMO, Nothing compares to TNG. But i also loved DS9 and also
Voyager. But TOS is way too old to be good. It used to be good, in the 60s
and 70s. But, since TNG, TOS seems so archaic.

Holy cow, did it not occur to you that the movie would be a great
opportunity to update the old boys?

Piffle. If you want to see "dated", watched TNG, with its dreary 80s over-PC
values and dreary decor, and a psychotherapist on the bridge, for God's
sake. TNG was never that good, it was just quite fun, that's all. It never
had that special something that TOS had (Shatner, in truth) and most of the
episodes are just dull to watch now.

The TNG era had a fairly good run and then Babylon 5 came along and moved
the goalposts for TV scifi, and Trek has never managed a reply to that
challenge, so into a decline it went. B5's story arc, depth,
characterisation and continuity of purpose made TNG/DS9/Voy's
characterisation-lite, run 'em in any order for syndication style look old
and kind of quaint. Roddenberry's naive socialist futopia didn't help
either.

LOL I like Brad Pitt for Kirk and Ioan Gruffudd for Spock, but maybe
they are both too old!

FYI: Re: Ioan Gruffudd

He'd be perfect. He can even do the eyebrow thing. :)
