Arguably, it could have gone like this:

Sean Connery

Dr. No 1962

From Russia with Love - 1963

Goldfinger - 1964

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - 1965

Thunderball - 1967

You Only Live Twice - 1969

Roger Moore

The Man with the Golden Gun - 1971

Diamonds Are Forever - 1972

The Spy Who Loved Me - 1976

Timothy Dalton

Moonraker - 1978

For Your Eyes Only -- 1980

Lambert Wilson

Octopussy - 1983

From a View to A Kill - 1985

The Living Daylights - 1987

License to Kill -- 1989

Sean Bean

Live and Let Die -- 1995

Methodology:

My approach was to play it safe and go with a plausible alternate Bond
film universe, where decisions that weren't taken in the real world
actually happened. So there's no off the wall casting or absurd
scenarios (like George Lazenby playing Bond for twenty years).

I started with Sean Connery as Bond, even though he was not the first
(or even second) choice for the part, but I really don't think the
series would have taken off as it did with Richard Johnson or Patrick
McGoohan in the lead. Connery was a once in a lifetime blend of actor
and part. I think it's safe to say that the series would not have been
as popular without him.

The first three pictures are the same as in the real world. I put
OHMSS in its originally scheduled position, followed by the other
titles in the "Blofeld trilogy", thus providing a story arc and
emotional climax to the Connery era that it didn't have in the real
world.

No Lazenby. Instead we get Roger Moore and The Man with the Golden
Gun, which, in reality was Harry Saltzman's original idea following
Connery's departure after YOLT in 1967. Arguably, I could have gone
with Patrick Mower, who in the real world was reportedly the
producers' favorite after Connery left the series for good (after
DAF), but was rejected by United Artists: They didn't want to risk
their profitable franchise with another unknown actor after the George
Lazenby experience. Ultimately, I decided that in this universe,
United Artists and EON decided to continue the franchise with a
well-known actor, for the following reasons. First, in reality, Bond
mania had peaked and was on a downhill slope after Thunderball and I
doubt things would be any different in this universe, and the studio
and the producers might very well feel that they need a "name"
actor to attract audiences. Secondly, in this timeframe, everything
else being equal, Moore would have just come off a highly successful
run as The Saint and might arguably been interested in leveraging that
success in feature films. I have the producers following up TMWTGG
quickly, as they did in real life, but in this universe, I have them
making DAF, because the novel's gangster- related plot would have
seemed ripe for exploitation in the wake of The Godfather. After a
period of time mirroring the behind the scenes wrangling that took
place in the real world, I have Moore bowing out after completing his
three picture deal with TSWLM.

>From there, we go straight into a three picture deal for long time EON
fave Timothy Dalton. In the real world, the producers had him in mind
for the part as early as 1968, so I have him being offered the part in
this universe as well. I have MR first because it ties in with the
"space movie" trend of the time. Just like the real world, this MR
is an outrageous fantasy, and the producers next go with the much more
down to earth FYEO. I suspect that Dalton he would have been as
successful here as in the real world (i.e. not very), and the producers
buy out his contract after his second picture..

With Dalton out after an unsuccessful tenure, I decided to go with
Lambert Wilson, because he was supposedly Broccoli's first choice
after Moore left in the real world. I have never seen his screentest,
so I have no idea how he would have fared, but nonetheless I have him
completing a three picture deal and bowing out. Wilson wasn't a
"name," but I can't think of any who would have been ready,
willing and available in 1982-83. In the real world, of course, James
Brolin tested about this time, and was supposedly given a holding
contract, but casting him as Bond is just plain ridiculous, isn't
it?.

After that, it's hard to tell. Ultimately I don't have the
producers hiring Brosnan because, based upon everything I've ever
read, his selection as Bond was more a marriage borne of convenience
than of genuine desire He was only cast as Bond in TLD after Timothy
Dalton proved unavailable, and no one could agree on Wilson or Sam
Neill. Subsequently, he was not among those tested for GoldenEye, and
reportedly got the part at the behest of MGM. Of the actors who were
tested, Sean Bean was allegedly Barbara Broccoli's favorite, so I put
him in LALD, exploiting the "urban" action genre.

Eh? Lambert Wilson?

The guy is French!

Why would fans want to see a Frenchman play Bond? They wouldn't.

I very much doubt Broccoli wanted him. Probably more rumour than
anything concrete. Besides, Eon/UA would choose an American before a
Frenchman. Examples being: Burt Reynolds, Adam West and let's not
forget, John Gavin (US actor) was signed up as Bond to star in Diamonds
Are Forever.

Can't see Lambert Wilson - with a dodgy English accent - being James
Bond. He would have the Goran Visnjic Bond candidate of his day!

I assume you didn't know Lambert Wilson was French, Will?

As for Sean Bean - he's not Bond material. Too Northern, too working
class for Bond (no offence meant to Mr Bean). But then neither is
Daniel Craig right for Bond but he got the gig! Anything is possible
when Babs is in charge. LOL

I saw a few short clips of Wilson's test at the LA convention years
ago. I remember the crowd howling with laughter when it was shown and
I believe it was due (in part) to an unflattering profile shot of him.
I doubt Cubby could have sold UA execs on this choice.

>From all I've been able to find in print, Pierce Brosnan was not on
Cubby Broccoli's initial list of potential replacements for Roger
Moore. Director John Glen claims to have brought Brosnan to Cubby's
attention several times and it was finally decided to ask Brosnan to
screentest. This occurred in the late spring/early summer of 1986
while Brosnan was filming THE FOURTH PROTOCOL. What makes this stand
out is the screentest was completed over three days with added special
effects. Not your average test at all. Upon viewing the completed
footage, Cubby was seen nodding his head yes and UA execs soon approved
as well. Wardrobe fittings and photos were completed only to have the
REMINGTON STEELE debacle derail the whole plan. Brosnan would have
been Bond in '86 had the TV series not been renewed at the last moment.

My dream series would shape up like so;

DR NO Sean Connery
FRWL Connery
GOLDFINGER Connery
THUNDERBALL Connery
OHMSS Connery
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE Connery

DAF Roger Moore
LALD Moore
MWTGG Moore
SWLM Moore

MOONRAKER Lewis Collins
FYEO Collins
OCTOPUSSY Collins
AVTAK Collins

LIVING DAYLIGHTS Pierce Brosnan
LTK Brosnan
3RD FILM (PLANNED FOR CHINA)
GOLDENEYE Brosnan
TND Brosnan
TWINE Brosnan
DAD Brosnan

CR Daniel Craig
