Bit of an interesting read here, from newly discovered documents, on
how the Bond franchise almost didn't survive the Dalton period, never
mind the legal woes at the time:

Very interesting article. Perhaps GE with Dalton was never really an
option . . .

Maybe not, but I do remember Michael France saying that he wrote his
initial draft of GE with Dalton very much in mind.

Ah, but there are video sales and rentals. Mucho profito. And, Daniel
Craig is LUCKY if he reminds us of DALTON.

Yeah. They said the same thing after TMWTGG, to the point where Salzman
sold his half of EON.
What they avoided by switching actors now is the decline we saw with
Connery and Moore, where they get old and out of shape and moviegoers
started losing interest. Then the new guy's task is almost too much.
Luckily with Moore's third film after TMWTGG bombed they went all out
to reinvigorate the franchise.
I'm sure that's what EON was planning with Dalton when MGM pulled the
rug out.
