The 1967 James Bond spoof is a classic?

I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The copyright on the original CR, which is the 1954 TV version, was not
renewed, and it is in the public domain. That means anyone with a copy
can use it legally for anything (I expect it's even available for
download somewhere). The fact that the literary rights on the show
have not expired is something of a sticky issue best left to lawyers.

CBS bought the rights for Climax! (the name of the show), which then
sold them to independent producer Charles K. Feldman, who made the 1967
Casino Royale. Feldman released the film through Columbia, which ended
up with the rights for the film (they may have partly funded it too--I
don't remember).

Sony bought Columbia, MGM bought UA. Sony bought MGM/UA.

Therefore Sony now has rights to remake its own film, which is the 1967
Casino Royale. They've wanted to be the "Bond Studio" for a while...
they now even have option for Kevin McClory's second Thunderball
remake, and effectively kiboshed McClory's return to producing Bond
pictures, which was pretty unlikely anyway. For a while, it was even
rumored that he would hire Dalton to play Bond in competition with
Brosnan.

How's that for too much fun? I share your dislike for remaking
"classics," but point out that:
a) The 1954 TV version of CR is not awfully faithful to the book.
b) The 1967 version of CR has almost nothing whatever to do with the
book. It also has almost nothing to do with James Bond, reality,
coherence, or anything on this planet. It's a film that would probably
be far more entertaining if they had filmed the cast parties and cut
out all that was being shot for use in the finished product.
c) The 2006 version of CR appears to be only a reasonably close (albeit
less than some) version of the book.

So "remaking the classics" is hardly the case here. The best thing
about the 1967 version is the theme music, which almost certainly won't
be reused (it's light and frothy, exactly the opposite of what EON
wants for the tone of the new picture).

Oh, and lest someone bring it up, not only does Sony own the rights to
the book CR (which is not out of copyright), but it also owns the
rights to the 1954 TV version (the copyright itself is expired, but
there are still ownership rights) and the 1967 film (which are not
expired either). On the other hand, I think that options on the
Thunderball remake revert to McClory in a while (not sure when), in
which case, if he's still alive, he can legally remake it again...

The behind-the-scenes legal wranglings behind the Bond films have more
back-stabbing, international intrigue, real espionage, and human
interest than most of the real films have had.

On the other hand, remaking The Italian Job or Charade, both great
films--and remaking them with wimpy casts, is tantamount to treason in
my book. The idea that Marky Mark is a replacement for Cary Grant is
an idea about as stupid as any I've heard.

Sorry about the extra detail in this post. I'm a little sick (sore
throat and fever) and so I'm a little prone to prattle on right now.
Perhaps it contains some stuff that a few of you will enjoy amidst the
endless gunk spewed out from the likes of Moo Moo Sandwich, who must
really enjoy hearing himself talk.

Nice post Eric. Well thought out and detailed enough to be considered
for the AFJB post of the week. Right information posted through the
fog of a cold. Cudos sir.

Hope you feel better soon.

Regards,
Matt

Trademark issues, too, I think. Might not be able to use 007 or James
Bond on a DVD cover... and, any minute now, the words Casino Royale may
be trademarked...

I remember on the directors commentary for 24 Hour Party People and the
writer & director agreeing it was always disappointing to see the
United Artists logo and not have it followed by a Bond film. And this
was their own film!

Or, you know, pick on director and not just shoved together the work of
a few of them.

What about estate after he's dead?

If I remember correctly, the rights that resulted in the 1967 CR were
sold by Fleming to Gregory Ratoff. Feldman acquired them from Ratoff’s
estate.

I think that's true, but I also believe the reason that they were
available in the first place was because of the 1954 CR. I'd have to
look this up to be sure. Feldman had the rights for several years
before he did anything with them. He had Ben Hecht doing uncredited
work on the script, and Hecht died in 1964.

How is lovely Finland this time of year? I was there last fall.

Thanks for asking, Eric. At the moment here in the north it's quite
gloomy and rainy--no snow, though. In fact, there have been a few
summery days already this spring.
