While reading the Tolkien FAQ and Less FAQ, it occurred to me that a
connection could be made between the assumption that Trolls were bred from
Ents and the possibility that the Entwives were subjugated by Sauron during
his war against the Last Alliance. I'd like to hear other people's thoughts
about this.

My first thought is "Eugh!" :-)
But it sounds like a reasonable idea, if somewhat sad. I'd always liked
to think, like Treebeard, that the Entwives may someday return.

Didnt Tolkien say in one of his letters that the entwives all perished
before the war of the last alliance when saurons forces created the brown
lands out of the entwives gardens?

I don't have it in front of me but, if I am not fooled, the Professor was
careful to use terms like "I do not know" in that letter. I think it's a
question he left unanswered, though there is room for hope when one
considers different strange tales concerning trees (e.g. those of the Old
Forest) in conjunction with Treebeard's comment that the Entwives would have
liked the Shire. I feel inclined to contest those who dismiss this by
countering that the "trees" in the Old Forest were Huorns (BTW what's the
correct plural of Huorn? Huorni?). Ents could become Huorns, so why not
Entwives, especially if disillusioned by the destruction of their gardens.
Given the fact that Ents themselves became "treeish" Huorns when tired, it
is quite possible, especially if seen together with Treebeard's answer that
he doesn't know how the Entwives would look like by that time.

In one of the eary chapters of the book (it may have been the first,
but I don't know) Sam has an argument with Ted Sandyman in a tavern,
over reports of a "walking tree" seen in the Shire recently. Merry and
Pippin weren't there, so I assume they never heard about it.
Now, if Sam had been there to hear Treebeard talk about entwives and
how they would be attracted to a place like the Shire, I assume a very
interesting conversation would've ensued. They just weren't fated to
meet again at that time.
