| Round v. Flat ME [message #274452] |

Having read Morgoth's Ring last year (convalenscense) I got a little
fascinated with the idea of reconciling Tolkien's writings on a round ME
rather than the flat ME. A year later and after a lot of rumination, I came
up with some fancy ideas about how the two versions could be reconciled. I
can't be the first to try it, so anyone out there interested?
First off, the sun that would already be there to "kindle" ME would have to
be a dwrf or something not looking very different from a bright star.
Melkor could have wrenched the moon from ME and used it as a spyplace until
driven from it -- and the flower of the dying tree could have been used to
relight it and cleanse it rather than becoming it. (Or you could make it
Mars and keep the Moon legend.) And the other tree's fruit would have been
made one with the darf sun to become the sun known in the late 1st Age and
beyond.
The "straight path" to Valinor would be an illusionary account as all the
earth would have already been "bent" (these textx are reputedly the best
explanations by Menof what their ancestors heard from Elves millennia ago).
But Valinor would still be removed from the world and new lands made at the
fall of Numenor.
I was also thinking of a post-Sauron ME wher Men tame the trolls and use
them for hot sports arena action, such as the Uruk-toss. where each heat
sees the demise of a few hapless Uruk since trolls don't toss very
accurately.
