Seasons 2--4 were top of the heap. Seasons 1 and 5--8 are mostly great.
Good episodes appeared sporadically for about 3 seasons after that.

i seriously think the new episodes (season 17) of the simpsons are
better than ever. they are pushing so many more boundaries than they
ever were before. now the writers arent holding back like they used to
have to. A lot of the earlier stuff was just more cookie cutter shit
used to medicate american audiences. if you think the later episodes
arent funny i seriously think you must be missing about 90% of the
jokes. I'll admit sometimes the humour is crazy, but that's what has
always been good about the Simpsons, the 'random' factor. now that
simpsons is willing to risk the same level of humour as family guy, the
much better development of characters in the simpsons allows for much
more clever episodes.

Well, that's because they spent most of the time working on the movie.
Still, that 400th episode was pretty good, although it was painfully
obvious that it was the lead-up to the film (I thought only "Rugrats"
did that - must have got the idea when they were at Klasky-Csupo).
