Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!
http://www.ianfleming.org
May 19th, 2006
To Our Friends and Fellow Bond Fans in the Internet Community:
We the editors of "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!" would like to offer you
greetings and, after a fashion, a goodbye.
For ten years now, we've used this site to explore the world of James
Bond from every angle we could imagine, and we've enjoyed every minute
of it. Many of you have shared the journey with us from its beginning,
and we're immensely grateful to every one of you for your support and
loyalty.
MKKBB began in 1996 with Panos Sambrakos, a budding young web designer
whose desire to create an HTML version of the alt.fan.james-bond
discussion group's FAQ soon evolved into a much more ambitious vision.
None of us could have imagined back then what MKKBB would grow into, or
how quickly. David Morefield and Deane Barker signed on as contributing
editors and soon a number of fan-created feature articles and
interviews fleshed out the site, earning us the beginnings of a loyal
readership who recognized us as the site made for serious Bond fans, by
serious Bond fans. We then approached James Rumley, an accomplished
journalist with a following of his own at his respected "007 News"
site, and folded the two sites into one new entity that provided
breaking news as well as feature articles. Soon after, we became the
official web presence of the Ian Fleming Foundation, forming an
alliance that flourished for over two years.
In time, "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!" came to enjoy a huge readership of
daily visitors. During the filming and release of "Tomorrow Never
Dies," 007NEWS was the first source to break numerous major stories,
and was quoted at other entertainment sites as well as being reviewed
on CNN. From late 1997 through 1998, MGM-UA's official James Bond
website directed visitors to 007NEWS as the most reliable source of
updates relating to 007. During filming of "The World is Not Enough,"
it was reported that the film's first unit crew used MKKBB to track
progress on their second unit's work filming the famous boat chase down
the Thames. MKKBB was invited to cover the world premiere of TWINE in
London.
Numerous awards followed; we were singled out for the coveted "Project
Cool Sighting" not once but two times, and tapped for various "Cool
Site" awards. We received awards or recommendations from CNN,
Entertainment Weekly, Yahoo Internet Life , The New York Times on the
Web, USA Today, Daily Variety, MSN network and the BBC.
Our proudest legacy, however, has been the creation of a successful and
enduring model for Bond fan sites, a model that combines breaking news
with in-depth, fan-created features examining the world of 007 with
respect, fondness and a healthy dose of humor. It's a model that lives
on at a whole new generation of sites around the Web that continue to
entertain and inform us on a daily basis (and yes, we visit them, too!)
For us old-timers who remember how rare it was to find quality Bond
resources on the Internet of 1996, the vast wealth of top-quality
007-related information and entertainment available at fan-operated
sites today is almost an embarrassment of riches. And yet, the irony is
that just as things have gotten really exciting in the world of on-line
Bond fandom, changes in our own lives have forced us to reduce our
involvement with MKKBB.
The good news, for us, is that our private and professional lives have
pulled us in exciting and rewarding new directions in the last year or
so. The bad news for this site, and for you our readers, is that these
developments have made it impossible for us to give MKKBB the attention
it deserves. Career advancements, marriage, children...all the usual
suspects are breaking up the band, as it were, and something somewhere
had to give. MKKBB was always a very personal project for all of us; we
set out to create and maintain a personality for the site that was
intimate, familiar and consistent, and to that end we never felt
comfortable turning it into a "committee" enterprise with a lot of
hands at the wheel. In the good times, that approach brought us a lot
of success, but once we too were forced to let go of the wheel, MKKBB
finally ran aground.
It can't have escaped your attention that updates to this site have
come to a grinding halt. Many of you have continued to visit us anyway,
often writing to us out of concern and love for the site, and for that
we're very grateful. If we've been slow to respond to your mails, its
only because we haven't really had an answer for you; for months now
we've kicked around ideas for what should happen to MKKBB, how we can
"save" it or remake it, but sooner or later it's time to face up to
reality.
It's never easy letting go of something you care deeply about, but
after a lot of difficult soul-searching we've all come to realize that
we simply don't have the time or resources to keep this site
flourishing as it should. To that end, we've reluctantly decided to
shut down operations at MKKBB (at least as we've known it to date) and
give the old girl a graceful exit.
At this point, we plan to keep our existing pages up indefinitely for
anyone wishing to enjoy our extensive archive of articles, interviews
and other resources. However, as it's become impossible for us to
update the news in a timely manner, those efforts will cease. We feel
it's not fair to keep our loyal readers coming back again and again for
updates that will most likely never occur. The anticipation for "Casino
Royale" is keen and as Bond fans we all want to know the latest news as
fast as we can; the hard and simple truth is that MKKBB can't provide
it. As alternatives, we recommend the Commander Bond and MI-6 websites,
both of which have proven themselves many times over as timely and
reliable sources for Bond news. Many of you have no doubt discovered
these well-run sites already and we encourage you to continue
supporting their fine efforts.
We're currently exploring ways to re-tool MKKBB and prepare her for a
new phase of life in the near future. We hope those efforts bear fruit,
but whether they do or not, it's been a great ride for all of us and we
look back on the last decade with great pride and affection.
To all of you who've visited this site over the years, who have
supported us by contributing your writings, your news tips, your ideas
and your words of encouragement and praise, we can only say thank you
with all our hearts. You have been the ones who made the journey worth
taking. Beyond any awards or professional recognition, beyond seeing
our names "in print" or racking up impressive but impersonal "page hit"
statistics, our real reward has always come from meeting intelligent,
funny, talented and just plain decent Bond fans from all over the
world, and chatting about the subject we all love so much. Thanks to
all of you, and keep in touch.
Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang will return...

That's a real shame! Being the first Bond site I ever stumbled upon, I've
always had a soft spot for MKKBB. And while I had noticed the site had
become pretty much static, I still checked in every now and then in the hope
of finding something new.
Thanks for all the news and goss over the years guys! Best of luck with
your new endeavours!
cheers

And for ten years MKKBB was a joy to read. The website was a brilliant
source of information and a great example of fan passion.
Well done, old boys.
Paul Baack and I thank you and wish you Godspeed.

Thanks for a great site. It does get hard with the kids and other
commitments to keep everything up to date but at least we have a
constant replenishment of fans willing to take on the tasks you
pioneered.
Good luck with all your future endeavors.

Agreed. I'm very sorry to see you guys go! It's too bad you can't find
someone of equal fan level and quality to keep it going.

Sorry to see it go. I've had the site bookmarked for years and will
miss it. Thanks for your work on it and I'm grateful you plan to keep
up the archived version.
One of my favorite articles posted on the site was the backstory and
history for TB which is still up here:
http://www.ianfleming.org/mkkbb/magazine/inside_tb.shtml This type of
info is hard to come by elsewhere and is what kept me coming back year
after year.
Best of luck!
Best Regards,
Matt

Thanks for all the hard work, it has been a pleasure reading you,
especially the "Right, Now Pay Attention" section!
