I checked out the latest video from the ZPZ tour, and it seems that the
bass player on this tour is using a 5-string. However Franky to my
knowledge never did such a thing.
Blasphemy?
Creative licensciousness?
Whattya think.

Blasphemy???? He gets 5 extra notes from a 5-string, so he could play
everything exactly like it had been played in the past...but he also
has 5 more notes at his disposal.
AFIK, the only "different" bass ever used in his music was O'Hearn's
upright.

John Balkin played upright bass on Overture To Holiday In Berlin. Jay
Anderson played upright bass on Thing-Fish and the CWRATJ remix. And
don't forget all the orchestral pieces.
Note also Thomas Fichter's "electrocontrabass".
FZ played Hofner bass on Friendly Little Finger and Down In De Dew, if
that counts as different.
Roy Estrada sometimes played electric bass with a violin bow.
And didn't Patrick O'Hearn play fretless bass too?

Now the bass player can play five note chords.
You haven't lived 'till you've heard a five note chord played on an
electric bass.

You could also add synth bass (played by Barrow and Thunes, and
possibly also by Tom Fowler on OSFA) to the list.

Pat also played fretless bass, which I don't believe Scott, Arthur, Roy
Estrada, et al ever did.

Does "Little Umbrellas" feature upright bass or is that just a regular
electric bass?
There's also "octave bass" ;)

He definitely did.

Aside from that, one of the main benefits of the 5-string is more positions
available from which to play lots of funny, fast little notes.
The low-B 5-string is a relatively recent phenomenon - there weren't that many
around in 1988. Not sure, but some technological advances may have been needed
to get that low open B to work right. Earlier >4-string basses were different
animals - 6 strings tuned like a guitar, or 8 strings in octave pairs.

Michael (or anybody),
What recordings are available where you can hear a five string bass?
I'm limited in my musical horrizons so any suggestions are welcome.

There's synth bass on Sofa, but I would imagine that it was played by
George Duke ("all keyboards and synthesizers") rather than Tom Fowler.

Upright. FWIW, Jay Anderson also overdubbed upright bass onto "Jazz
Discharge Party Hats" for the MFU CD, and maybe also "Dangerous
Kitchen." (I've only listened to the CD once or twice, so I don't
remember offhand.)

That's weird, I don't remember hearing that. I've listened to that album
at work a lot more than I have at home (at least on CD), so if there's
upright bass on there, it's probably too subtle a sound for me to have
noticed in the noise of the workplace.

Cool! It's hard to tell how that C-extension works from the photos, but with a
bit of searching it seems to work like the drop-D device on Kubicki Factor
electric basses (a lever opens up a few more inches and a couple more frets on
the E-string, getting it down to D). The drop-D tuning has been popularized by
Les Claypool among others, and there's a device called a Hipshot that can be
retrofitted to most electric basses, that retunes the E-string to D and back
again at the flip of a lever.
It's interesting that the earliest 5-string bass as reported in that article had
F as its lowest note - getting from there to a workable low-B seems to have
required a lot of effort in both the accoustic and electric realms.

I think "Dangerous Kitchen" has a bass overdub too, but for me it sounds
like electric.
